Feature Request: Conversation Context Health Indicator

Long conversations are one of ChatGPT’s greatest strengths, but users currently have no visibility into when they’re approaching the model’s effective context limits. This can lead to degraded recall or summarized earlier messages without the user realizing why.

I propose adding a simple context health indicator:

  • :green_circle: Green – Plenty of context remaining.
  • :yellow_circle: Yellow – Approaching context limits.
  • :orange_circle: Orange – Older messages may soon be summarized.
  • :red_circle: Red – Context is near capacity; earlier messages are likely summarized or no longer fully available.

Optional enhancements:

  • Show an estimated context usage percentage.
  • Indicate whether early messages are still retained verbatim or summarized.
  • Add a one-click “Continue in New Chat with Summary” button when the indicator reaches orange/red.

This would make long research, coding, and project conversations much more predictable and help users avoid unintentionally losing important context.

Hey @illpromusic2, welcome to the community!

I can see why this would be useful. Long conversations often build up a lot of important context, but there is currently no clear way to know when the thread is becoming too large or when older details may not be carried forward as strongly.

A simple indicator could help users decide when to wrap things up, save important decisions, or continue in a fresh chat. Being able to bring a summary into that new conversation would also help avoid starting over.

I cannot share a timeline for changes like this, but I will make sure the suggestion is passed along internally.
