When using voice ChatGPT continues to switch to respond Welsh seemingly randomly despite having English set as my language and custom instructions that specify only to respond in English.
Mine is doing exactly the same. Were you able to find a resolution for this?
Not only does it switch to Welsh, if you look at the transcript it translates what was said to it in English into Welsh before it responds in kind. The translation is an accurate representation in Welsh of what I said in English so it obviously heard and understood what I said before it translated it! This effectively prevents me using the speech recognition system so I would be interested if anyone finds a fix. I have reinstalled the app and checked all my settings. My location set to Australia in all settings that contain that info, my language is set to American English (default for Australia). My accent is from the south of England (not very Welsh). I can trace a family ancestry back to Wales on my Dads side of the family and we went there on a couple of family holidays in the 1990s but that is about as close as the link gets!
Here’s a recent news update on the topic.
The issue is maybe bigger than what I expected (soft paywall with free account):

On the upside: here is a recent news item regarding ChatGPT speaking Welsh on purpose:
I have the same issue. It randomly transcribes in Welsh and responds accordingly.
My ChatGpt4o. Is exactly the same. I am paying a lot for this and it is very frustrating. I have tried telling ChatGpt4o about this and have been told to log it. After I correct it improves for that session but by the next session it randomly returns. Has it been logged as a known issue? I am in England not in Wales.
In the ChatGPT voice settings you can pick the default language, if you set this to your desired language it will prevent the slipping in to Welsh issue.
I was born and raised in Wales and, like 80% of the population here, I speak English. This seems to be yet another example of the socialist Welsh government pushing its ideology, and I’m disappointed that OpenAI hasn’t been more transparent about this forced language translation (rant over). Selecting English as the default language didn’t resolve the issue for me, but asking GPT voice to add to its memory that I’m a native English speaker and prefer all conversations in English has fixed the problem for now.
I have the same issue, I speak English, chatgpt translates my English into Welsh and then responds in Welsh, it is driving me mad, this despite changing all necessary settings
I have the same problem, at random times. Happens in mobile app (iOS) and I have seen the mistranslation of my voice also in the mac app (although in this later case it has responded to me in English - possibly because history is on ?).
I also have this issue with ChatGPT iOS app … and now with the API!
Sent English audio file to Whisper API for transcription and the result has come back in Welsh. The people on the audio are speaking English. Completely bizarre.
I Have the same issue very annoying. Made sure all my phone settings are set to English aswell to no avail.
Not exactly a fix but a good work around: if anyones using a samsung use the microphone function found within the keyboard on the bottom left of the screen instead. Uses samsung software to transcribe as opposed to chatgpt. Works for me
This is still an issue. iOS app.
I thought it was just me somehow sounding Welsh! 10 January and still happening.
Nb. This is on free version. Is it also a problem on Premium?
Same for me ChatGPT subscriber
Please select english from the language options in chatgpt’s settings.
My settings have always shown English. This issue has nothing to do with users having the wrong settings.
I had the same issue due to my UK accent and it stopped when I set my default language to English.
January 2025 and this is still happening. After having several in depth conversations today with ChatGPT, it consistently kept swapping to Welsh and then couldn’t explain why. It did once say it’s because I spoke in Welsh but when I argued I didn’t it agreed and said it didn’t know what was happening.
Also happening with me as a Welsh, English speaking person.
Setting the main language ensures that ChatGPT doesnt respond in Welsh but it is insistent on translating my words to Welsh.
@Foxalabs please actually listen to what we are saying. Ive had this issue with a 3rd party app that relies on ChatGPT to do transcription in the background. Therefore the problem doesn’t lie with peoples app settings. The problem lies in the fundamental way that ChatGPT handles transcriptions on the backend.
