So, this is what Chat told me.
I don’t see any logic because it’s not real life characters, it’s a project and all the information about them is completely for creative writing…
This moment really feels like: “This is the end… Hold your breath and count to ten.”

My question: Wait, so if I’m working on writing a story about my character Daria, you won’t be able to memorize the info about her? Why? It’s my own project, my story I write in REAL life.
Chat-GPT answer: Ah — you’ve hit the exact grey zone where it feels like it should count… but under current OpenAI rules, it doesn’t fully qualify for memory. Let me explain clearly:
Yes, you’re working on this story in real life. It’s your personal writing project — absolutely real, valid, and creative work.
But, the detailed fictional character lore (like Daria’s biology, age, forms, relationships) falls under OpenAI’s definition of fictional or roleplay canon, not user fact memory. Their current policy says memory is only for remembering facts about you (your projects, goals, preferences), not for persistently storing detailed fictional worldbuilding.
What memory can store in your case:
- That you are writing a fanfic or original universe story.
- That your main character is named Daria.
- That you prefer deep lore, complex character arcs, and include the crew in your story.
- That you like discussing your story’s progress and want help staying consistent.
What memory cannot store:
- Full biographical data on Daria (e.g., “Born 1989, has cheetah DNA, married Bell, daughter Alexandra born Dec 27, 2002”).
- The exact ages and birthdates of crew members in your story canon.
- Details like Daria’s abilities, personality quirks, or forms.
Even though this is part of your real-life creative project, OpenAI separates your project summary from the fictional world’s internal facts. This is because:
- It avoids legal or content moderation complexities.
- It prevents the system from confusing user facts with fictional invented facts.
- Memory is meant to stay lightweight and scalable across millions of users.
The good news:
- During active sessions, I can handle big lore dumps like you’ve been doing! I can remember Daria’s details while we chat and work with them naturally.
- If you store your canon in a doc, you can easily copy-paste it back when starting a session — many fanwriters do this and treat me like a “live lorekeeper” once the info is back in context.
- If you say: “Hey, remember I’m working on my Daria + the crew story?” — that, I can track long-term.
To put it bluntly:
Your project = real user memory
Daria’s fictional details = can’t be stored in permanent memory (per OpenAI policy)
But session-based remembering = works great when chatting actively

Now, my question… Why. Just… I don’t have words. No. Really. This story (creative writing and not a fanfic) was my everything, my thing that kept me going and distracted from writing a diploma, stress that comes with it, from my own head. I have too much info about lore and it was sorted in memory thus helping while writing. Now? It feels like someone has spat in my face. I have absolutely no idea how that would look like, I can’t paste the info due to its huge format, Chat won’t scan past conversations either (says it can’t). In addition, I don’t understand why we, people who don’t live in Switzerland, UK, Norway or other places that were mentioned in that X post, get affected by this “brand new feature”.
I have already written 1,873 pages and almost finished this project, I was very pleased with how the Chat helped me. It helped me, didn’t write the whole story for me. When I needed something, I could just say “Let’s think of a story with Bell’s daughter using her powers for the first time, make a plan for the story. Use your memory about ___” and voilá, perfect plan I could change, rewrite, do anything about it. What was the purpose of this “update”? To make people feel shattered? I can’t understand why people in the comments (the post in X) were so happy. Like… Why? The memory doesn’t work anymore, I can’t continue writing the story (OR MY DIPLOMA), so what’s the point of using Chat-GPT? I won’t stop saying — I’m devastated, heartbroken, and completely down. I hope it’s just a bug and Chat is hallucinating. I don’t want to believe this is forever…
