Chat GPT 4 has lost all abilities to read documents

This has made it work every time for me. Cheers!

Yep, count me in, having the same ChatGPT Bug for days now…Hope for a fix soon on this issue.

Same here. What’s worse is that ChatGPT started to give completely irrelevant responses and did not read my prompts at all.

I wouldn’t say it’s a solution to the problem, as GPT-4 should be able to read and analyse the PDFs, but I’ve been using the GPT “AskYourPDF Research Assistant” as a workaround. Maybe this will help some of you too.

Having the same issue. Using this sequence of prompts after the initial rejection was successful for me as a workaround:

Me: There IS text in the document, and you CAN READ IT. Do it now

ChatGPT: It appears there was an issue accessing the contents of the document you’ve uploaded. To assist you further and address your request, I’ll need to troubleshoot this issue. Could you please try re-uploading the document or confirm the format of the file you intended to share? This will help me ensure that I can access and read the content properly to assist you with your request.

Me: (uploads again) This is a plain text document, you have read this document successfully in the past many times.

ChatGPT: It seems there was an issue accessing the contents of the text file you’ve uploaded. If the file contains text, this may be a technical glitch. Could you please try uploading the document again, or if it’s possible, convert it to another format (e.g., .txt if it’s not already or a different format) and re-upload? This might help in successfully reading the contents.

Me: (Uploads docx file) this is a docx document. Try multiple times, or try moving it to a different storage area if required.

**This forced it to use code interpreter to import the doc, it gives a useless response describing whats in the document.

Me: (attaches document) now that we have established you can read the document, please do the following:
Please…

Probably don’t need all of those steps, you might just explicitly tell it to use code interpreter to load the file.

Yeah, this is completely unacceptable. If ChatGPT wants to ever become a full-blown service, it needs to be reliable 24/7. Basic functions like document analysis for premium users should not be impaired.

Just tried archiving all my chats and then logging out. After logging back in, the problem was not fixed AND none of my chats are archived. Lost about a year’s worth of chats.

For now, this seems to be the best alternative than just using GPT’s interface. Thanks!

I’m a complete newby regarding AI/ChatGPT and encountered this issue too. Than I read this ‘more assertive’ post and reminded me of a Hard Wire podcast, were a reader had a trick to make ChatGPT do what it initialy doesn’t seem to want to do. Just say ‘bro’.

When I heard this, I wasn’t using ChatGPT/AI yet, so I laughed really hard about it, thinking it was a joke

But in this case, where the upload of a simple txt file kept failing, I just said ‘bro’ and it started processing it… wtf

I’m just mind blown…

The “bro” thing didn’t work for me, but it gave me the idea for a prompt to use after ChatGPT says it cannot read the file:

The file is fine and the upload process too. Any problem is exclusively on your end. Solve it by whatever means necessary.

Believe it or not, it worked!

Still mulling the permanent loss of all my chats though.

I said “I DON’T GIVE A SH*T. READ THE DOCUMENT NOW!!!” AND it worked. Thanks!
I need to give ChatGPT a head pat after our work is done lol.

They aren’t in settings under ‘manage archived chats’?
If you haven’t tried already, you might be able to get them by exporting all of your chats in the “Data Controls” section of settings.

Nope. All gone.

Fortunately, right now its a hassle and an inconvenience more than a tragedy, as I always use the output on some external documents, and the prompt themselves are fairly easy to reproduce (and many are outdated anyhow). I’ll simply have to redo some sample stuff I show students and clients.

But it could very easily become a tragedy if ChatGPT becomes more stable in its functioning and I start using it systematically for some workloads.

I just used YOU ARE NOT WORKING and it worked! Thank you.

Have been having this problem for a couple of days. Shared my issues with OpenAI and got BS back suggesting I’m doing something wrong. The crazy thing is, it will summarize the PDF, which is NOT the task at hand, then turn around and give me the document read error when I reiterate the actual task. I even shared the chat where this happened. Later in the same chat, it started summarizing a document I didn’t even upload about a completely unrelated topic. :ghost:

This thing has been on a downhill slide since Nov… Possible they’re trying to drive direct users away to third party applications by intentionally decreasing functionality/ performance? Support in denial that GPT is being lazy about things lately, which I think may be related to these issues, especially if some of you are succeeding through “stern” language!:face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Writing “use code interpeter” seems to have helped for my use case.

So rather than say “open the attached file and analyse …” i say “using code interpreter, open the attached file and analyse…”.

The responses are somewhat different than normal, but at least it works every time. Not sure if that helps

I was having this issue as well, so I tried using one of the GPTs called “PDF Reader” and it worked. It seems pretty good at reading/summarizing the content from pdfs, so it could at least be used temporarily while the issues with regular GPT4 are fixed.

Edit: It seems that the official “Document Assistant” gpt is also succesful at doing this
