Carbon Emissions of the API

I’d like to know some carbon footprint info for OpenAI’s API. I’m trying to go carbon neutral so having the right data is really important. Thanks!

Not sure about the carbon footprint but according to a recent news I’ve read, it consumes

500 milliliters of water (close to what’s in a 16-ounce water bottle) every time you ask it a series of between 5 to 50 prompts or questions

You are likely monopolizing a 2000 watt server for the duration of output generation. Iowa, UK, etc.

The more you use it, the lower the total footprint per API call, as we amortize the impact of the megawatt hours consumed during research and training in development that might also be considered, along with 500 employees, thousands of knowledge workers, and their infrastructure.

this is an answer from 2021 by openai staff and i’d imagine it’s still valid

to the best of my knowledge there isn’t a definitive answer from either msft or openai on this and i’d be hesitant to rely on what is essentially a guess by a 3rd party.

i’ll do some looking online and come back if i find anything more useful
