Can't turn off GPT-5 Thinking Mini

I cannot STAND the thinking model; it’s condescending and focuses more on "“providing [BS] answers/solutions” than addressing the issue at hand. I generated/re-edited a message 3 times already and even told the model to explicitly NOT use the thinking mode/use GPT-5 only, but it’s doing it anyway, wasting my tokens. Before, there was a “stop” button when GPT-5 went into thinking mode but it’s gone now! Is there a way to turn this dreadful model off, or block it from being used?

I agree it is so annoying and made me waste token on something it didnt need thinking

Oh my God yes!! Like i just recovered from the previous big update on the model and last night suddenly GPT keeps thinking in way i dont want to and i cant disable it even after i tell it not to use Thinking mode. I hope there’s an answer for this. It messed up my paper needs instead of helping because the app keeps “overthinking”.

For a “smart” model, Thinking is ridiculously dumb. I hope this isn’t the new normal.

GPT-5 is a reasoning model - not much you can do about it.

You can try setting the reasoning effort to minimal and verbosity to low and use the instructions parameter to get what you want.

If all else fails, don’t use the model - simple as that.

Paying subscribers of ChatGPT (Plus, Pro, and Team) can still use GPT-4.1 and non-paying subscribers can use GPT-4.1 mini.

I’m a free user, so I can’t choose a model. Even when ChatGPT is explicitly told to not use the model via instructions and customization, Thinking Mini is forced on us.

I don’t use ChatGpt - I use the API. Is GPT-4.1 mini not available in the drop-down for free users?

EDIT: Just found out that GPT-4.1 mini is not available for free users.

Oh no, they nerfed model selection for free users when 5 was released. We’re at their mercy. Earlier this week, when 5 was still working, you could select “get a simple answer” or something like that when the model went into Thinking mode but now it’s GPT Thinking Mini or nothing.

Understood. However, you must understand that OpenAI spends gobs of $$$ creating all kinds of AI solutions and they really need to make $$$ in return. So, as a free user (I hate to say this but) you get what you don’t pay for.

No that’s not a reason, I was using GPT 5 (even if don’t like the model) but now it’s like thinking and giving answers that does not meet my expectations, I’m a free user, but how come I was satisfied a day ago ? Makes no sense. Hope they get that fixed

I think I found something. Tell it to search the web, and you can cancel the thinking and it goes to GPT-5!

How ? Didn’t quite get it

The default thinking mode is one of the most terrible and stupid ideas.

Thinking mode should only be enabled if the user wants it for a specific message.

The default version should be a regular quick mini model without thinking mode.

And of course people should be able to switch between models, because the thinking model is often downright annoying.

No, eso no es suficiente. Enhorabuena, me alegro por ti si te gusta que tu modelo requiera más tiempo y sea más ineficiente, pero eso no es lo que quieren los demás. Cuando tanta gente se queja, ESO ES UN PROBLEMA.

You should be able to select search the web in the regenerate button. Searching the web is something only GPT-5 proper can do, and it will take it’s time to think and gather sources, but the skip should be available under where it says thinking. That will reset it so it doesn’t use the web, but still uses GPT-5.

i did beg chatgpt to stop abuse thinking tool…it even refuse to be knowing the tool exsist then well…no wonder why

Thanks a lot but it doesn’t work i don’t even have a regenerate button on iOS app :skull::heart:

This topic might provide a solution, even temporary; in my personal experice it works sometimes:

I would use the website. I prefer it over the app.
