Attention development team

Hello OpenAI Team,

To begin, Im not certain to where I can even post this to get it to the right minds, and perhaps this message never gets further than this forum. I use ChatGPT every day to draft emails, text messages, and social media posts. I had a wonderful conversation last week with approximately 20 educators. One of our collective frustrations is that when we copy a response from the iPhone app and paste it elsewhere, the text often retains bold or rich-text formatting. This creates extra work for everyone because we have to remove the formatting before we can send it. About 1/4 (a quarter) of the educators present stated that this subtle annoyance was the catalyst that drove many of them away from ChatGPT. If this is occurring with so many, its not a coincidence. Just imagine how something as simple as this inconvenience is diminishing your earnings or shrinking your profit margin. I gain or lose nothing from this conversation so this is infinitely something your team needs to look into.

I’ve compared this with Perplexity, and their copied responses paste as plain text by default, making the experience much smoother, this why several present in our discussion agreed this needs to be advocated to your development team. Its obvious there is a reasoning to this however please consider one or more of the following:

  • Make copied responses plain text by default.
  • Add a “Copy as Plain Text” button alongside the existing copy option.
  • Add a setting that lets users choose between rich text and plain text when copying.
  • ChatGPT makes life for everyone wonderful, and work more convenient by acting as an instant, multi-skilled digital assistant that eliminates repetitive, time-consuming tasks. It reduces cognitive friction by shifting your effort from creating information to simply reviewing and refining it. I challenge you as an educator and as your biggest fan to at least look into this problem with research, fidelity, and curiosity which has made you the marvel that you are.

This seems like a small issue, but for people who use ChatGPT professionally or frequently, it has a noticeable impact on the user experience and time… something none of us have much of. It would save time and make ChatGPT much more convenient for everyday writing.

Thank you for considering this feedback. I hope this can be addressed in a future. Thank you for your time!

Hey adam_allison, welcome to the forum!

That's indeed inconvenient. I'll pass this feedback along to the product team so they can review the request and decide whether changes to the text formatting can be implemented.
