Atlas Agent always fails after clicking "Continue" (Browser context works, Agent startup fails)

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to determine whether this is a known issue or whether something is wrong with my account.

Environment

  • ChatGPT Atlas
  • Version: 1.2026.126.0 (f3c024c5d41)
  • ChatGPT Plus subscription
  • macOS Sequoia 15.7.4
  • MacBook Air M2 (2022)
  • 16 GB RAM

Issue

Browser context works perfectly, but Agent never starts.

Whenever ChatGPT offers to use my browser and I click Continue, it immediately fails with:

“Hmm…something seems to have gone wrong.”

The browser never becomes controllable.

What works

:white_check_mark: Browser context

ChatGPT can see the current webpage.

Examples:

  • Hostinger
  • WordPress
  • cPanel
  • Example (com)
  • Any other website

ChatGPT is able to inspect the page and answer questions about what is currently open.

:white_check_mark: Simple browser actions

For example:

"Use my browser to open example (com)

works correctly.

Atlas opens a new browser tab with example (com)

:white_check_mark: Agent proposal appears

When I ask something like:

“Fill out a form for me”

ChatGPT correctly responds with:

“I can use your browser to fill out the form for you.”

and shows the

Continue
/
No thanks

buttons.

What fails

The moment I click Continue, Agent never starts.

Instead, I immediately receive

“Hmm…something seems to have gone wrong.”

The browser never becomes controllable.

This happens before any browser interaction occurs.

Reproduction steps

  1. Open any website.
  2. Ask ChatGPT to perform a browser task.
    Examples:
    • Fill out a form
    • Take control
    • Click a button
    • Navigate through the page
  3. ChatGPT proposes Agent.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Immediate failure:
    • “Hmm…something seems to have gone wrong.”

Tested on

  • example (com)
  • Hostinger
  • WordPress
  • cPanel
  • Generic websites

Result is identical every time.

Troubleshooting already performed

:white_check_mark: Reinstalled Atlas completely

:white_check_mark: Confirmed latest Atlas version

:white_check_mark: Confirmed ChatGPT Plus subscription

:white_check_mark: Confirmed logged into the correct account

:white_check_mark: Browser diagnostics show:

Network Status: connected
Profile Connected: true
Session ping succeeded
Profile ping succeeded

All WebViews are connected.

Additional observations

Browser context clearly works.

For example ChatGPT can:

  • read the active webpage
  • inspect page content
  • guide me through websites

The problem only occurs when the browser should transition into a live Agent session after clicking Continue.

Question

Has anyone experienced this?

Specifically:

  • Browser context works
  • Agent proposal appears
  • Clicking Continue always fails before Agent starts

Is this a known backend issue, an account entitlement problem, or something else?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks for reporting this, @SheriffNainar. I can see how confusing it is when the browser context works but the Atlas Agent fails right after clicking "Continue."

This is now being investigated by our specialized support team. We'll share an update here as soon as we hear back from them.

If anyone else is seeing the same behavior, feel free to add any details about your setup or what you're seeing after clicking "Continue." That can help with the investigation.

Hi @SheriffNainar,

Could you please open a support ticket by emailing support@openai.com and include:

  • A HAR file recording of the issue
  • A screenshot showing the exact error message
  • The affected organization ID

Once you've submitted the ticket, please drop the case ID here in the thread so the team can investigate further.

-Mark G.

I’ve been tracking this for a while, and all I can say is that it looks like the agent backend is broken. It’s happening across all websites, the moment the agent tries to interact and control the browser. Here’s an example request-response.

@OpenAI_Support Can you check the above request-response pair?

Welcome to the Community and thanks for providing a fetch snippet, @thunderbird89.

A fix has now been deployed, and the issue appears to be resolved.

Could you please retry Atlas Agent Mode and let us know if it's working on your end now?

If you're still able to reproduce the issue, please send a fresh report to support@openai.com, then share the new case ID here so we can help follow up.

-Mark G.

Looks like the agent is once again able to control Atlas! Thank you for moving on our report :folded_hands:

Thanks for the update @thunderbird89! Glad to hear it's now working on your end.

I'm also wondering if @SheriffNainar is still seeing the same problem, or if things are working again on your end too. It would be helpful to know whether this is fully resolved or if there are still any edge cases showing up.
