Assistant API v1 File Upload and Retrieval Issue When Switching from Assistant v2

Steps to Reproduce the Issue:

  1. Add Files with Knowledge Retrieval in v1: Add files while using Assistant v1 with knowledge retrieval.
  2. Delete Files: Delete the files.
  3. Switch to Assistant v2 and Add Files: Switch to Assistant v2 and add files for file search.
  4. Switch to Assistant v1 and Use API: Use the Assistant API v1.

Observed Issue: The API v1 fails to retrieve knowledge from files uploaded via Assistant v2. For files to be accessible through the v1 API, they must have been uploaded using the v1 version. However, after switching to v1, you can no longer add files from the OpenAI UI console, and the v1 API cannot retrieve knowledge from files uploaded via v2.

Hi! This is expected behavior – for v1, you’ll have to use the APIs to both add files and do retrieval on them. Playground support is for v2 only.

Files attached to Assistants via v2 aren’t “compatible” with the v1 APIs: https://platform.openai.com/docs/assistants/migration
