My API account has been active for about 2 months, and I’ve already spent around $70.
However, my usage tier is still Tier 1.
I was under the impression that accounts are automatically upgraded after certain usage/spend levels, but that doesn’t seem to be happening in my case.
Has anyone experienced something similar? How long did it take for your account to be upgraded?
API usage tiers update automatically as account spend and age increase. Tier 2 becomes available once an organization has paid at least $50 in total and at least 7 days have passed since the first successful payment.
If you’ve spent around $70 over the past two months and your account is still showing Tier 1, that doesn’t seem expected to me and may need a manual review.
Please check the Limits page in your API settings to confirm the tier. If this indeed shows Tier 1, please contact us through the Help widget in the Platform and include your org ID or the billing email associated with your API account so we can investigate further.

Upgrade eligibility will only be recalculated when making another credit purchase.
If one pays $100 now as an initial payment, or even in multiple payments within the first week, there will never be a tier upgrade - regardless of waiting for something to automatically happen. Nor does the usage matter.
One must make a second payment, paying only after the required passage of time. At the time of that newest payment, then the total paid to OpenAI, inclusive, along with the days elapsed since the first payment, is factored for the next qualifying tier. For someone that has paid in $70, it can be the minimum $5 new payment, just to trigger this calculation.
That is: when the tier upgrade system isn’t broken, which also has happened.
Then, the fault in my example is that paying $100 immediately is allowed, but that is also the maximum balance a tier-1 account can have, so you can’t even top it off without also making usage to reduce the current account balance.
Solution: make a minimum payment, receive tier 2. Make your total paid to OpenAI over $100, receive tier 3.
Ack, thanks for the correction @_j. Despite what the intended process is, in practice, it seems some accounts only refresh on a later successful credit purchase. After reading more about this internally, it looks like we’re currently working to improve this process!
