ChatGPT Agent Mode has been removed and the current guidance is to “use Work.”
The problem is that Work is not a replacement for Agent Mode.
Agent Mode had a very specific capability: it spawned a virtual computer, opened a real browser, visually interpreted rendered websites, clicked through interfaces, handled dynamic UIs, and could hand control to the user for authentication before continuing.
That made it extremely useful for research where simply retrieving page text is not enough—for example, navigating stores, product configurators, country selectors, shipping options, and other interactive websites.
Deep Research is not a substitute. Codex/Work is not a substitute. Computer Use in the ChatGPT app is not a substitute either.
They are different tools with different purposes. None currently reproduces the Agent Mode workflow.
So this was not a migration. A distinct capability was simply removed.
What makes this worse is that there was no meaningful advance notice, deprecation period, migration guide, or explanation for users who had built workflows around it. The Agent documentation was simply changed to say that it is no longer available and to use Work instead.
Products change, but removing a unique paid capability without an equivalent replacement or migration path is not acceptable for users who depended on it.
Agent Mode, or a true functional equivalent with the same virtual-computer and visual-browser capabilities, should be restored.
