After enabling advanced account security on the Codex app, phone number verification is mandatory (Case 10556951)

Hi,

After enabling Advanced Account Security, I am unable to log in to the Codex App because it requires phone number verification. The phone number I previously registered is an old one from several years ago — it is no longer in service and cannot receive SMS or WhatsApp codes.

Current situation:

  • ChatGPT web works fine
  • But the Codex App is completely blocked at the phone verification step

I saw a similar issue reported earlier Codex client auth forces WhatsApp code to a dead number — but ChatGPT/Codex web log in fine (Case 09491223) - #14 by owallesun , but I’m not sure about the latest progress.

Request for assistance:

  1. Could the support team please help me update or remove the old phone number linked to my account?
  2. Would it be possible to add Passkey as an alternative verification method?
  3. Or provide a manual workaround / support resolution for this verification issue?

This has been blocking my access for several days. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

@openai_support Any progress today?

Add verification methods or support for modifying phone numbers

This issue with the phone #s is few years old. It doesn’t appear that they’re in a hurry to fix it. The only reason why everyone is tripping up now is they’ve added some new feature that forces people to fall back onto a dated busted phone verification system OpenAI never bothered fixing.

The support@ which is powered by AI automated replies only solution is ‘shall I cancel the renewal’. So I don’t have a good feeling that anyone is in a hurry to fix any of this.

We def need an easy way of exporting all the data out of ChatGPT at the very least, so cancel/refund and starting over becomes a viable option.

ChatGPT has an Export data feature, which can be found under:

Settings → Data controls → Export data

However, there is no Import data option available.

Additionally, the exported file contains all conversations from the past several years, resulting in an extremely large file that is very difficult to read or manage.

That’s a start. Maybe after getting a new account setup with OpenAI and regaining access to Codex, can code a file reader to make that job easier.

I think we have a higher chance of doing that before OpenAI fixes this or even acknowledges it to be a thing they are fixing.

I’m unable to sign in to Codex because it redirects me to phone OTP verification after I sign in with my ChatGPT/OpenAI account using a security key. My account has Advanced Account Security enabled.

In ChatGPT settings, the “Text message” option is disabled and says: “This setting is disabled because you have Advanced Account Security enabled.” ChatGPT works normally, and I can access my account from trusted devices. The issue happens only with Codex. Codex asks for SMS/WhatsApp verification using an old phone number that I no longer have access to, and there is no alternative verification method

A similar issue was previously resolved for my account under Case Number: 09500410.

My current support case is Case Number: 11140720

Could someone from the Codex team please take a look?
