I’m located in Iran and as of May 3, 2025, I was surprised to find that I can use ChatGPT without any VPN or proxy.
I checked my IP and it clearly shows I’m in Iran, yet access is working just fine.
At the same time, Iran is still not listed among the officially supported countries.
I’m wondering if OpenAI has officially changed its access policy for Iranian users, or if this might be a temporary or unintentional change.
We Iranians are genuinely passionate about technology and artificial intelligence. Many of us are eager to learn, grow, and contribute.
It would mean a lot if the restrictions were officially lifted — this could help us grow faster, improve our lives, and be more involved in the global AI community.
I’d really appreciate any clarification from the OpenAI team or others with similar experience.
Apparently OpenAI lifted the restrictions for Iran (at least for ChatGPT), it might be temporary but since OpenAI decided to provide more freedom to its users, and it might be a step into it, it can be permanent (or at least for a while).
Search this in Google if you’re interested (I can’t write the link here):

I hope it’s permanent, it is really disturbing that not every tools and features are available for some people, specially in Iran where every useful software is either filtered or blocked.
Thanks Hossein
I completely agree — equal access to tools like ChatGPT should be a right, not a privilege. Hopefully this is the beginning of more open and fair access for everyone, regardless of where they live.
