Feature Request: An Affordable One-Off AI Pass for People on Lower Incomes
I’d like to suggest an affordable, non-recurring payment option for ChatGPT.
I really appreciate that OpenAI provides a Free version of ChatGPT. However, I think there is a sizeable group of people who fall somewhere between the Free tier and being able to comfortably afford a regular paid subscription.
For someone on a tight budget, committing to a monthly subscription can be difficult, even if they would happily pay a small amount occasionally when they have the money available.
One idea would be an Affordable AI Pass, perhaps around £5, as a one-off purchase.
For example:
- £5 could provide enhanced access for 30 days, or a fixed amount of usage/credits.
- There would be no automatic renewal.
- Once the pass expires, the account simply returns to the Free tier.
- Users could purchase another pass whenever they could afford one.
- It could have lower priority or slower processing than higher paid plans to help keep the cost sustainable.
- It could provide increased limits for things such as file and image uploads and other features.
I don’t think £5 necessarily has to be the exact price. The important idea is having a low-cost, non-recurring option.
This could make ChatGPT more accessible to people who might be able to find £5 occasionally but cannot reliably commit to a monthly subscription.
There could also be different approaches, such as:
Time-based: £5 gives enhanced access for 30 days.
Credit-based: £5 provides a fixed amount of additional usage that doesn’t necessarily expire after 30 days.
OpenAI could determine which model works best financially and what limits would make sense.
I appreciate that there would be costs involved in payment processing, infrastructure, support, fraud prevention and providing the AI itself. I’m not suggesting that the economics are simple.
I’m simply suggesting that there may be an opportunity to create a bridge between:
Free access
and
a full recurring subscription.
A low-cost AI Pass could allow people to contribute towards the cost when they can afford to, without requiring them to make a long-term financial commitment.
I think making AI accessible shouldn’t only be about having a Free tier or a full subscription. There could be value in having something in between for people whose circumstances change from month to month.
Thank you for considering the suggestion.
