I had the same issue on Edge. But when I use Safari, I notice a verification as you do. When I finish the verification, everything goes OK.
If you’re using Mac, try Safari.

Same problem here… I have the Chat GPT app on my iphone and it runs perfectly. On my browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari, etc… ) nothing is working. I’m frustrated as all the problems started after I’ve paid for subscription… earlier than subscription all worked flawlessly. Message is still the same: “Something went wrong. If this issue persists please contact us through our help center at help.openai.com”
My colleague in front of me is logging in with his free account and all is running perfectly. No issues! This is crazy and frustrating. I’ve paid as I need such service and now neither I can use premium version nor free version…
Exactly the same for me. Bought for paid last night and now can’t use it this morning.
on PC, try firefox, same as @dqhl1990 did, and this solution worked for me.
on Aneroid, with or w/o vpn does not work for me.
on Safari, with or w/o vpn does not work for me.
on iPhone, do not have device to test it.
FireFox works on windows 11!

Firefox: First Token Error at log-in (5x) now seems to work
Error message when using chrome (my standard browser), it works fine with Firefox and on may Android phone (chrome).
I have the newest version of Microsoft Edge on my private Laptop and it works too. The thing is, there also seems to be a problem with the VPN. On my work desktop, which is using VPN, I can log into ChatGPT but I also receive the error. However, here the edge version is 17.0.2045.60, the same applies for the Chrome version 116.0.5845.180. But I have noticed if I turn off VPN, it work with Edge as well as with Chrome.

Welcome to the community, where a lot of other long-time users have gathered to share answers.
For the many reporting the issues they are seeing and wanting to know if OpenAI is doing something about it, at the bottom of the forum is a link “Service Status” that will tell you what’s going on, and indeed right now, OpenAI is facing issues.
A massive pile of reports is useful if something new has come up and OpenAI needs to see who is being affected by issues not automatically detected. Here, further replies would just push this useful link further back in the topic history.
While having problems and waiting for the website to start working again, you can use the ChatGPT app.
