I just started using the OpenAI API 4 days ago. I have not even ran a successful query yet. My account is showing July budget $0.00 / $18 Resets in 1 days. I’m new to this so excuse my terminology, I’ve created a RAG and I’m using Embeddings OpenAI but it errors “429 You exceeded your current quota, please check your plan and billing details”.
I don’t understand, does the $18 mean I have $18 to use? Am I reading this correctly? If so, why am I getting this error.

I think you are on limits page. It is the way to control your budget, monthly usage credit. You can increase or decrease it.
You should purchase credit adding a payment method:
https://platform.openai.com/settings/organization/billing/overview
It means you were given an API trial credit back in 2022 or early 2023 when you created an OpenAI account (probably to use ChatGPT). It expired in three months. $0.00/$18 on your grants page means you have $0 left.
As just indicated, prepayment is required, purchasing account credits that expire in a year, to fund API calls.
OpenAI no longer gives a trial amount even on new accounts.
