I think OpenAI is missing a payment primitive that will become increasingly important:
native stablecoin payments for ChatGPT, API credits, and autonomous agents.
Here’s the problem I’m running into:
I can have an AI agent that earns or manages funds in USDC.
That agent can:
→ make decisions
→ execute workflows
→ consume OpenAI API tokens
→ generate revenue
→ hold USDC
But when it needs more inference, I still have to act as the payment bridge:
USDC → human → bank/card → OpenAI
That feels like an unnecessary bottleneck.
The more interesting future is:
AI agent → earns USDC → pays for inference → keeps operating
This isn’t really a “crypto payment” problem anymore.
It is a question of how autonomous agents participate in the economy.
OpenRouter already supports USDC for AI usage, and Stripe/Coinbase are making stablecoin payments increasingly practical.
So I’m curious what OpenAI thinks:
Should AI agents eventually be able to fund their own compute?
And if stablecoin payments are not currently planned, what is the main blocker?
Technical?
Compliance?
Accounting?
Risk?
Or simply product priorities?
I’d love to hear from other developers building agents—especially anyone already running agents that generate revenue or manage capital.
Would you actually use USDC to pay for OpenAI inference if it were available?
