Visible Assistant Coordination Signals / Mascot State Indicators

One thing I’ve noticed during long, technical ChatGPT and Codex sessions is that the assistant often has to communicate an operational state through tone alone:

“Stop here.”
“This branch is getting too large.”
“We can discuss this, but implementation should pause.”
“Context switch underway.”
“This task is contained and complete.”

Those signals can be subtle, especially during fast-moving project work.

I’d love to see a lightweight visual coordination layer that makes those states explicit.

Examples could include:

  • :stop_sign: Stop: hard hold / do not continue execution
  • :warning: Caution: scope creep or overload developing
  • :yellow_circle: Yield: slow down, contain, or reconsider the branch
  • :green_circle: Proceed: bounded and ready to continue
  • :locked: Execution Locked: discussion remains open, implementation is paused
  • :package: Contained: branch successfully bounded
  • :counterclockwise_arrows_button: Context Switching: assistant is moving between work domains

The fun part: let the ChatGPT/Codex mascot communicate these states visually.

A stop sign.
A hard hat.
A clipboard.
A traffic cone.
Maybe even pacing back and forth with a tiny picket sign when the user refuses to stop opening new branches. :joy:

And when Codex runs out of quota, the mascot could simply fall asleep, standing up or flat on its back, complete with the infamous anime snot bubble.

“Quota exhausted. Do not disturb.”

The humor would be great, but I think there is a legitimate UX benefit underneath it: make the coordination state between the user and assistant visible instead of requiring users to infer it entirely from language.

This could be especially useful for long-running research, coding, planning, and multi-project conversations where the user and assistant are effectively coordinating work together.
