I think I’ve run into a bug with the recent free Codex reset, and I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing.
On July 14, I had 77% of my weekly Codex usage remaining, with my next reset scheduled for July 19. On July 15, my usage was reset to 100%, but my next weekly reset was also pushed back to July 21.
My subscription ends on August 10, so this change moves my final reset from August 9 to August 11-after my subscription expires. If that’s how the reset was applied, it appears to reduce the total amount of usage available during my subscription instead of simply giving me an extra reset.
I also haven’t received any banked reset credit, either from previous resets or from this one. The reset was applied immediately and appears to have replaced my existing schedule rather than being available as a banked reset that I could choose to use later.
I’ve contacted OpenAI Support to ask them to verify whether this is expected behavior or an issue with my account. Has anyone else seen the same thing, or can someone confirm how these non-banked resets are supposed to work?
It would appear that OpenAI is still using this “reset” idea to make its next five days of usage predictable - for them.
Being aligned with a subscription end if you choose not to renew would just be one further side effect - any quota exhaustion could have arbitrary alignment with that date. Some may quit ChatGPT and have their last day be day 6 instead of day 5.
The banked reset you have to use and pull the trigger on yourself - from a supporting app exposing it.
I never got any banked resets - Using codex from my Mac with my Plus subscription.
Everytime there was an announcement about resets OpenAi just did them for me and I mostly didn’t really benefit from them. 77% Usage is not the world, but in my case it is about 45€ of wasted subscription time that I literally cannot use. I am a first time 20x Customer and I was/am using this month as a evaluation month.
Same exact thing here - new to Codex as of last week. I kept seeing the usage limit being re-set to 100% and assumed it was just the mechanics of how usage limits worked - i.e. at the end of each day it would reset to 100% if you’d only used a little bit (I was sitting around 70-80% remaining usage each time I noticed it jump back up to 100%).
This actually caused me to then rinse through my entire weekly usage in 1 day yesterday, as I was now under the assumption that it would just reset at the end of the day.
Had no idea this was actually just OpenAI applying random usage resets worldwide - I’m not chronically online so hadn’t seen the Reddit posts / news about this.
Very annoying, I’d have been a lot more sparing with the tokens but assumed a daily reset was just how it worked, from how they implemented these reset offers. Also on Mac desktop app.
I cleared my cookies and cache, I reinstalled the codex app, I checked the correct URL for usage. Yesterday apparently was another reset, I am back from 98% usage in my Pro Subscription to 100% and again my reset got delayed by 2 days.
These resets keep being more hurtful than they help in a lot of cases, there are also no notifications in codex or GPT telling you that your usage got reset.
The single best implementation of real free usage resets is to keep our initial reset days the same, give us a notification in app at least and let the people use it. I understand in some cases, like 1 day before their reset it is actually nicer to move the reset day forward for the user, but in all other cases the refill is not worth the planning trouble.
I once again lost 2 days of using my subscription because you keep forcing my weekly reset schedule to move forward.
I am frustrated because I got a very generic OpenAI Support answer to my Email-Support request and no one is taking this seriously. By denying one weekly reset out of 5, because a month has 4,33 Weeks on average you are taking away 20% of my available monthly usage thus costing me 230/5= 46€.
You can gift as many resets as you want, I would rather have a consistent service, that is predictable and reliable, because I want to keep using my product and I can’t know if next month there are going to be this many resets.
Noticed this too. I got free resets all the time, kept moving the reset date forward, first by one day. Then at least once by 2 days.
Drain also seemed much faster than before, no higher workload or anything, all of a sudden 2 days ago with 8 days and a couple hours to go for my weekly reset (since apparently now weeks have 8 days instead of 7 I guess lol not sure what planet I have moved to in our solar system) I drained my weekly usage within a single day.
When I resubbed to Codex with Pro 5x back in early july, same workload on daily basis, I barely ever managed to hit my 5 hour limit that was still being shown back then. Let alone Weekly.
And now hitting in a single day after one of those random resets of the weekly usage, does not make a whole lot of sense to me.
I am hesitant upgrading my subscription if this is a bug because I don’t wanna waste another 150 bucks just to keep going when I have time to work in my free time.
It’s surprizing because usually they accompany the reset with new banked reset since we have been complaning a lot on the reset side.
It is still unclear which are the conditions (% of usage of your actual quota?) allowing you to bank a free reset when they do a reset.
So far on my end I didn’t complain cause every time they reset I gain capacity not loosing.
But I pay each month and I did not consider the issue of the ending date. I’m interested to see how they’ll tackle it.
I would say a pretty easy fix exist, instead of force reseting everyone to 100% they could just give everyone the said reset as a bank reset to apply whenever. But I don’t really know the feasibility on the tool itself.
