The ability for free users to select a default or primary model for their conversations

Hi OpenAI Team and Community,

I’d like to propose a feature that I believe would significantly improve the experience for free-tier users of ChatGPT: the ability to set a primary or default model for conversations.

Feature Overview
Currently, free users interact with models such as GPT-4o-mini and GPT-4o, but we don’t have the option to select a default model for our chats. This feature would allow free users to choose the model that best fits their needs and have it persist across conversations without needing to specify it each time.

Benefits

  1. Customization - Users can select the model that aligns with their preferences, such as GPT-4o-mini for quicker responses or another model like GPT-4o for more detailed answers.

  2. Consistency - It would create consistency in responses across multiple sessions, especially for users working on ongoing projects or studies.

  3. Improved Efficiency - It saves time, as users won’t have to manually select or specify their preferred model with each new conversation.

While I understand that advanced features are part of the paid plans, this addition could enhance the overall user experience for free users without overwhelming system resources.
