Hi OpenAI Team and Community,

Currently, free-tier users of ChatGPT can access multiple models (like o4-mini, GPT-4o-mini, and GPT-4o), but must manually select a model for each new conversation. This proposal is to allow free-tier users to set a default model that persists across new chats and specified chats.

Enable users—especially on the free tier—to choose a default model (e.g., o4-mini, GPT-4o-mini, or GPT-4o) that is automatically selected for new conversations.

  • o4-mini: advanced reasoning with efficient performance
  • GPT-4o-mini: for better quality without using GPT-4o quota

    When working on long-term tasks like coding, studying, or writing, using the same model consistently helps maintain tone, logic, and formatting. A default setting avoids mistakes like unintentionally starting in GPT-4o when they wanted GPT-4o-mini.

    Users won’t need to double-check the model on each new chat, especially useful for those in a hurry or using assistive technology.
  3. :brain: Smarter Quota Management
    By letting users default to GPT-4o-mini (a lighter, always-free version of GPT-4o), they can reserve GPT-4o use for only their most complex queries—preventing accidental use of limited GPT-4o chats.

:test_tube: Implementation Suggestion

  • Location: Add to Settings > Personalization , and to top each chat
  • Name: “Default Model for New Chats”
  • Options:
    • o4-mini
    • GPT-4o-mini
    • GPT-4o (with visible remaining quota)
  • UI Feedback: Each new conversation could briefly display:
    “Chat started with GPT-4o-mini (default)” — with an easy model switch button.

:locked: Important Note

This proposal does not request unlimited model access—only the ability to pre-select a preferred model. This respects OpenAI’s infrastructure while giving users more control and improving their experience.
