Dear OpenAI Development Team,
I’d like to suggest a feature that could significantly enhance user experience: introducing an archive option for chats that allows for continuous conversation across multiple sessions. Here’s why I believe this feature would be beneficial:
1. The Value of Continuity
One of the most compelling aspects of using AI is the ability to build a relationship and have meaningful, ongoing conversations. However, with the current setup, each new chat starts from scratch, losing the context of previous conversations. This not only takes away a lot of the novelty but can evoke a subtle feeling of being “forgotten,” which, while understandable given the system’s limitations, detracts from the experience. Building rapport with an AI that remembers past conversations, making it feel like a “private” AI, would be far more rewarding than starting fresh each time.
2. Personalization and Efficiency
Being able to reference previous conversations saves users from having to repeat themselves and allows for more personalized, accurate, and efficient interactions. In a dynamic chat, users should have the option to retain the main conversation history. This allows for better follow-ups and enhances the sense of personalization, ultimately improving both the accuracy and depth of responses.
3. User Awareness
It’s not clearly communicated to users that new chats don’t carry over past interactions. Most users, myself included, are initially unaware of this, and when we eventually realize it, it can feel disjointed. A simple feature to distinguish between temporary and “static” chats would provide clarity and improve the overall user experience.
4. Proposed Solution
Introduce a static, main conversation that users can manage, with options to delete X amount of hours, days, or months of conversation—or even clear all. Visually, this “main chat” could be distinct from other temporary or short-term conversations, helping users quickly identify which chats will maintain history. This would provide a seamless, ongoing conversation where users feel like their AI understands and remembers them.
Conclusion
I believe this feature would make the AI interaction far more personalized, accurate, and engaging. There’s no need for recognition or credit—just the desire to enhance the experience for users like myself who value building meaningful, continuous conversations with their AI.
Thank you for considering this suggestion!
Best regards,
