Feature Request: Allow Multiple Selections in ChatGPT Questions

Summary

I would like to suggest adding support for selecting multiple answers whenever ChatGPT presents users with a list of options, unless the question genuinely requires only one answer.

The Problem

During conversations, ChatGPT sometimes presents several options and asks the user to choose one. However, real-life situations often involve multiple answers that apply simultaneously.

For example, when discussing health symptoms, a user might experience bloating and frequent burping at the same time. If the interface allows only one selection, the user may have to leave out important information.

This can lead to incomplete context, unnecessary follow-up questions, and potentially less accurate or relevant responses.

My Proposed Solution

Introduce flexible answer selection with the following features:

  • Multiple selection: Allow users to select one, two, three, or all applicable options.
  • Clear instructions: Indicate whether a question allows one answer or multiple answers.
  • Flexible responses: Include options such as “None of the above,” “Not sure,” and “Other,” where appropriate.
  • Combined interpretation: Ensure ChatGPT considers all selected answers together rather than treating one selection as the user’s complete situation.
  • Health-sensitive design: In medical and other high-impact conversations, prioritize collecting complete and accurate information before offering guidance.

Why This Matters

This improvement could make ChatGPT more accurate, intuitive, and accessible. It would allow users to describe their real circumstances without being forced into an artificially limited answer format.

The impact could be especially important in healthcare-related conversations, where several symptoms or relevant factors may coexist and omitting one could affect the interpretation.

Final Suggestion

Please consider making multi-select questions the default whenever multiple answers may reasonably apply, while retaining single-select questions when only one answer is appropriate.

A small interface improvement could make a meaningful difference in the quality of conversations and the usefulness of ChatGPT’s responses.

Thank you for considering this suggestion.

Send this through ChatGPT’s in-app feedback too, since here it’s mostly other users. Those option lists are just text the model writes, not a real form control, so there’s no selection state to change. A prompt can ask it to label questions “choose one” or “choose all that apply”, but no API parameter controls multi-select UI.
