Feature Request: Better Navigation for Long Conversations & Projects
As conversations grow into long-term projects, it becomes increasingly difficult to revisit, reuse, and continue specific parts of the discussion.
I suggest adding the following features:
1. Search Within a Conversation
Add a search icon that allows users to instantly find any word, phrase, topic, or heading within the current conversation, without scrolling through hundreds of messages.
Benefits:
- Faster navigation.
- Better productivity.
- Easier management of long-term projects.
2. Reply to Any Previous Message
Allow users to reply directly to any previous message (from either the user or ChatGPT).
When “Reply” is selected:
- The referenced message appears above the compose box.
- ChatGPT uses that specific message as the discussion context.
- This creates a threaded discussion without requiring users to copy and paste old text.
Benefits:
- Continue discussing an old idea naturally.
- No endless scrolling.
- Cleaner conversations.
3. Forward to Another Chat or Project
Allow forwarding any message to:
- another existing chat,
- another project,
- or a new conversation.
This would preserve formatting while allowing users to continue working on the same idea in a different context.
Benefits:
- Reuse work easily.
- Better project organization.
- Less duplication.
4. Optional Bonus Feature: Pin Important Messages
Allow users to pin important responses inside a conversation.
Pinned items would appear in a side panel for instant access.
This is especially useful for:
- operating manuals,
- prompts,
- templates,
- key decisions,
- project milestones.
Why This Matters
Many ChatGPT conversations evolve into knowledge bases, consulting projects, research, or documentation.
Current navigation works well for short chats but becomes inefficient for conversations containing hundreds of messages.
These features would significantly improve the experience for power users managing long-running projects.
