Subject: A Built-In Suggestion Box to Help Improve ChatGPT
I’d like to suggest adding a simple “Suggest an Improvement” feature directly to the ChatGPT menu.
During everyday conversations, users often discover problems with AI responses or think of ways to improve the product. Currently, sharing those ideas can require leaving the conversation and searching for an appropriate feedback channel.
My proposal is a simple, built-in suggestion box that allows users to:
-
Describe a problem or suggest an improvement.
-
Copy the relevant question and AI response into the submission.
-
Attach screenshots or other evidence showing what went wrong.
-
Explain what the correct answer or desired behavior should have been.
-
Submit the suggestion for review by the appropriate team.
An automated system could group similar submissions, identify recurring problems, and help analysts prioritize them. Human reviewers could investigate the most useful reports and determine which improvements merit further testing.
My suggestion comes from my experience working for nearly 40 years at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, where I worked with building automation and control systems.
We had a capability in Honeywell EBI that allowed me to capture the relevant program screen and screenshots of the equipment at the point of failure, then send that evidence to the control engineer. Rather than relying on my description alone, the engineer could see firsthand what was happening.
I believe AI development could benefit from a similar approach.
For example, when ChatGPT gives incorrect troubleshooting instructions, a user could submit the original question, the AI’s response, a screenshot of the relevant screen, and the solution that actually worked. Developers would have a concrete example to investigate and potentially use to test future improvements.
Privacy would be important. Users should choose exactly what information and screenshots they submit, review the submission before sending it, and be able to remove sensitive information.
The goal is simple: make it easier for everyday users to help improve AI by providing specific, useful evidence of problems they encounter.
AI developers cannot anticipate every situation users will encounter in the real world. A built-in suggestion box could help close that gap by turning actual user experiences into actionable feedback.
