Dear OpenAI team,
I would like to suggest a UX improvement that I believe is both simple to implement and highly impactful: Smart Scrolling for long conversations.
I’m a ChatGPT Plus subscriber and use the platform frequently for long, in-depth, emotionally rich conversations. As these conversations grow in length, the interface becomes increasingly difficult to navigate — especially when trying to scroll back. In some cases, it becomes nearly unusable.
A possible solution would be to implement a smart scrolling mechanism:
- Display only the last 10, 20, or 50 messages by default
- Load previous messages on demand via scroll or click
- Let users define how many messages should load by default
This approach is common in modern messaging apps (e.g., Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Slack), and greatly improves performance and usability, especially in long-running chats.
As a developer with over 30 years of practical experience, I can say this isn’t a complex change at the UI level, and it could make a huge difference for many users.
I’d appreciate your consideration, and I hope this feedback can be forwarded to the relevant UX or product team.
Best regards,
Avi Weiss
