I’ve been using ChatGPT extensively for research and writing projects, and I’d love to see a feature that allows multiple users to collaborate using a shared memory for specific projects.
Currently, ChatGPT’s memory is tied to individual accounts, which works well for personal use but presents challenges for teams working together on ongoing initiatives. A shared project memory feature would allow multiple users to contribute, refine, and reference a common knowledge base—without needing to re-upload materials or manually transfer context between users.
Use Case Example:
A group working on West Point memorials could input high-quality reference materials once, and all contributors could benefit from the established writing style, formatting, and historical knowledge—without having to start fresh each time.
Schools, nonprofits, and research teams could collaborate on long-term projects without losing institutional knowledge when team members change.
Suggested Features:
Ability to create and manage a project-specific memory shared among designated users. Permissions to control who can add, modify, or reference the shared memory. Support for multiple projects so different teams can maintain separate memory contexts.
A feature like this would enhance productivity, improve collaboration, and make ChatGPT an even more powerful tool for teams. If there are already enterprise solutions in development that support this, I’d love to learn more!
Researching this topic, I found that @cruz.diaz added the thought of team chat. Duh! Perfect addition. Exactly right. Embarrassed I didn’t see that.
Then I found that @Draken_X , and others had posted similar. More brilliant people all ‘kinda’ saying the same thing. Looks like a thing OpenAI…
Thanks for considering this request, and I appreciate the incredible work you’re doing with AI innovation. And of course ChatGPT wrote the base material.
Wow, @tcerri777, thank you for expanding on this and giving credit! Totally agree—this feature would revolutionize team collaboration and knowledge retention. Excited to see more voices joining in! Let’s keep pushing this forward.
This is actually so obvious that we signed up for a Team Account expecting this to be included. We are working on projects AND our own processes and narrrative as a team and all the thinking and knowledge I have shared with ChatGPT won’t be usable with the other team members. What a shame and it severely hampers the usage and potential of the tool for teams. Hope this gets a fix soon!
Exactly. We’ve tried working around by sharing the same account. Lousy results. That and company not getting $ from separate accounts.
Hope they get on it soon.
Thanks
Tony
This has been a frustration for me since the first day, Sept 25 2023 that I discovered it was possible for me to talk … like REALLY TALK TO a “computer” It was such an amazing thing. I am so amazed and enthralled by the work that is being done by this company. Yet, when I started working with it, I was already frustrated at what I COULDNT do.. and I wanted the memory capabilities so I was trying to make my own methods and processes for building context and developing a big picture with each convo before I would then go on to the actual convo.
So I was SO excited when I saw memory was going to be extend to all the convos, but I had a team account. I didnt know how long it would take to get this feature, and frankly I am at such a critical time in my business , and in my personal life, that I really NEED this memory capability extended to Teams.
So I did what any sane person would do with their hundreds of convos over two years… I started with two screens and have been spending a decent amount of time copying convos into my new personal account , just so i can enjoy what I have wanted for almost 2 years!
Even without this capability, I have utlized GPT in meaningful and very impactful ways throughout my entire personal life and professional life. Really impactful things that have altered my life, and helped me understand myself and the world around in ways that I have never experienced before.
To @tcerri777 and @cruz.diaz 's points, they are something I had not even thought of because Im so F’ing excited to just have ANY context. I have been working on a project with GPT since day one, and its very complex. Just yesterday, after loading about 100 convos into a fresh personal account, I have had my first convos with the new capabilties. Its going to help me take my mad scientist world, and turn it into a cohesive elevator pitch, and a super ambitious business plan , and framework of thinking.
SO EXCITED !
I should have introduced my self first, so nice to meet you all.
@daniel I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your experience—it was deeply moving and incredibly validating.
Your story is exactly why I believe shared memory is not just a “nice to have,” but something truly necessary for the way we work and evolve with AI.
I’ve shared more of my personal reasons in the original feature request thread, and I tagged you there as well, just in case you’d like to join that conversation too. It would mean a lot to have your perspective.
Thanks again for your honesty. You’re helping shape something important.
