Sam Altman leaving: OpenAI announces leadership transition

Someone suggested it , so whomever that was I give you credit for this idea but I’m not going to scroll up to find you (sorry)

What if we did develop a letter to OpenAI as the developers working on this tech and signed it, and it is essentially just a letter stating

“This is what we feel would be the best direction, we know its not up to us, but this is our two cents”

Maybe there is a world in which they will listen or take into account things the community has to say. We aren’t just using the commercial site we’re actively building and most of us are building really cool things that are market disruptors and can help the world so it’s just as much our responsibility as it is theres.

Just my two cents. I would lead the charge on it if this got enough likes or support.

If anyone likes this idea just like the comment and I’ll take that as your vote.

If not, no problem, just throwing this out there.

Your two cents might carry more weight if it had $1 billion appended to the front.

This is the type of negativity that just prevents anyone from ever making a decision that they feel is too big for them. It’s just negativity.

Ok _j, you’re right…we don’t have a billion dollars.

Next please.

edit: and also - we ARE the billion dollars, collectively.

Yeah, the wind blows and the leaves shudder. Be the tree :deciduous_tree:. I agree that OpenAI is not dead simply because of this move. Still though it’s very concerning. Ilya, Sam, Mira and Greg are all very important to the movement. I hate to see the band break up, no matter how it goes down or whose fault it was. I like the idea of a dev forum letter, but we have to make sure it’s truly representative of all the devs here. There are a lot of different feelings about this situation.

Should Sam and Greg comeback to OpenAI?

  • Sam and Greg should return to OpenAI
  • Sam and Greg should create a new venture

Should add another voting option for they get the band back together, get messy and honest in public, but are very real and transparent with what went down. Everybody wants mommy and daddy to break up forever lol

Sell the company to MSFT and be done with it. OpenAI and Ilya can do their non profit thing in peace.

Well when this all came out of nowhere, there was a definitive sense of emotionally rash actions in the air. Now, as it seems, these things appear to be unfolding quite rapidly.

With stories like this popping up, you get a little more of an honest sense of just how emotional and reckless things are.

I’m not sure we’ll be needing that open letter, because it seems very likely that they are already receiving an open letter that was pre-appended with 13 billion to the front of it.

I don’t think it was raw and reckless. Sure, sophomoric termination, but the point is still valid.

Ilya got recruited for this non profit open source vision. And that was the story. But then it changed into this whole other thing.

If I was Ilya, I would have done the same thing, except I would have tried to offload Sam, gdb, and the for-profit company to investors/msft.

Can’t have your cake and eat it to.

OpenAI Non Profit coud then go forth doing open source alignment research or whatever. Could even start publishing again!

The fact that Ilya tried to retain control of this ongoing for profit concern shows that he doesn’t even believe himself and his goals.
