just heard back from openai support, hopefully it’ll be fixed soon.

Me to CHATGBT 4o: “Your Read Aloud feature has not worked for a few days. Do you know why or when OpenAI is going to fix it?”

ChatGPT 4o: "The Read Aloud feature in ChatGPT has been experiencing issues recently due to server overload and technical difficulties. Many users, including those on iOS and Android, have reported that the feature either does not activate or produces an error message indicating that the system is under heavy load.

OpenAI has acknowledged these issues, and it seems they are working on resolving them. However, there is no specific timeline provided for when the feature will be fully operational again. In the meantime, some users have tried various troubleshooting steps like updating their apps, reloading, or logging out and back in, but these have not consistently resolved the problem.

For updates and more detailed discussions on this issue, you can check the OpenAI Developer Forum and other user feedback channels."

You’re using an unofficial third party application which appear to violate the OpenAI terms of service related to accessing ChatGPT. Any errors you’re encountering should be addressed to your software vendor.

Me too! I have the same problem! please fix it, as soon as possible. thx

Yeah, but only in the mobile app. I just tested in a browser on a phone, and it has the same behavior as desktop browsers, nothing happens when you press the “read aloud” button. The read aloud feature only works in the mobile app, in this case iphone.

OK. Is Google Chrome also an unofficial third party? If so, suggest another browser.

Here is what I see in the console in Firefox:

Your, now deleted post referenced a GitHub repository for a wrapper application to the ChatGPT Web application.

That is an unofficial third-party application for accessing the services offered as ChatGPT.

The CORS errors your are seeing appear to result from requests made from a context other than the one associated with the browser client through which you are accessing ChatGPT.

My guess is you’re currently using either a Chrome/Firefox extension or a userscript which is attempting to pull information from or write information to your ChatGPT session.

This is also unsupported and possibly a ToS violation depending on the scope of the extension/script.

If you attempt to access https://chatgpt.com using a browser without any installed extensions or active scripts which try to interact with the ChatGPT application, your problems should disappear.

This doesn’t make sense, why should my chrome extensions not let me hear audio even on mozilla or explorer? and anyway I removed all the extensions I had, I restarted and the problem still remains.

That was not a general suggestion, but rather an observation given the information provided by another user.

But to answer your question more broadly, extensions which modify page content can inadvertently cause some assets to fail to load.

If the script responsible for triggering the audio playback was not loaded then, as you might expect, the desired audio would not play.

As such, when attempting to debug issues, it’s advisable to eliminate as many possible sources of error which includes disabling extensions and scripts.

Even if this does not resolve the error it allows a clearer view into what is actually happening.

Thanks for your assistance, but at this point I don’t know what to do, I thought it was a well-known error that would be resolved in a few days and not “it’s your fault, figure it out” when it has always worked before. I removed all my extensions, I don’t know what to do, I still trust that the situation will be resolved soon. Thank you again.

Are you saying that the “read aloud” feature is working for you?

From what I can see, “read aloud” doesn’t work in any browser. Neither on desktop nor on mobile. On mobile, “read aloud” does work in the mobile app.
It doesn’t matter whether extensions are installed or not, nothing happens when you press the “read aloud” button.

I recorded me trying to use the feature here

It may look like I’m just hovering my mouse pointer over the button, but I’m actually clicking.

It doesn’t matter which model I use.

No, that’s not what I’m saying at all.

I’m saying I’m not going to spend time reading through someone’s logs if they’re using an unofficial desktop app or some other means to access ChatGPT which modifies the page content as it isn’t possible to know where the problem is.

I have the same issue.

What official app should we use to avoid modifying the page?

Here is me running ChatGPT in Windows Sandbox

It can’t get any cleaner in than this.

Since it’s in a sandbox environment, it’s guaranteed clean. But as shown, absolutely no extensions are installed.

I could make a similar video with me insalling Firefox and Chrome in the sandbox environment with the same result. (already tested, just didn’t record it.)

Again, it looks like I’m just hovering my mouse button over the “read aloud” button, but I’m clicking away at it. Nothing. And as you can see, no error message either. The button only reacts by showing a grey highlight.

are you using Edge? Did Open AI ban running Read Aloud from web? It stopped working for me last week

Yeah, I’m using Edge in this particular video. But I get the same result in Chrome and Firefox, all tested as fresh installations in Windows Sandbox.

We’re all wondering what happened. Apparently, they’re having some issues with the Sky voice, and claims that they paused that one, hence you get Juniper when choosing Sky.

So if you choose Sky in the mobile app, Juniper’s voice play instead. But again, only in the mobile app, where read aloud works. On desktop, it’s completely silent regardless which voice you choose.
