I would like to propose the introduction of a foundational “Lucidity Mode” for ChatGPT, specifically designed for business and professional use.
By “lucidity,” I refer to the following properties:
- The ability to clearly distinguish between knowledge and inference
- The ability to explicitly state “I cannot determine this” when appropriate
- The prioritization of constraint adherence over generalized optimization
- The maintenance of internal logical consistency within a single response
- The refusal to substitute user-defined correctness with statistically common answers
In this proposal, “lucidity” is positioned as the conceptual opposite of hallucination.
Current large language models are fundamentally built on probabilistic generation optimized for fluency and plausibility. This architecture is highly effective for creative and exploratory use cases. However, in business contexts, the primary requirements differ:
- Predictability
- Reproducibility
- Constraint fidelity
- Logical consistency
- Clear boundaries of capability
When a user explicitly defines correctness (e.g., “Any design outside this specification is incorrect”), the system must treat that definition as the highest operational constraint. If generalized optimization overrides explicit user constraints, the output may remain plausible but becomes invalid for the task.
This creates a structural trust gap.
