Proposal: Developer / Codex-Focused Subscription Plan

I would like to suggest a dedicated Developer / Codex subscription plan for users who mainly use OpenAI for software development.

Many developers primarily need Codex, repository editing, debugging, terminal/agent workflows, testing, refactoring, and long continuous coding sessions. They may use image generation, voice, and other consumer features much less.

A developer-focused plan could provide:

  • no short 5-hour coding limit
  • much larger weekly/monthly Codex allowance
  • long-running repository and terminal sessions
  • pay-as-you-go credits after included usage is exhausted
  • optional automatic credit top-up
  • clearer usage tracking
  • same or lower price than a broad general-purpose premium plan

Another useful option would be flexible subscription allocation, allowing users to direct more of their plan toward Codex, research, images, or other features.

For developers, the priority is not more unrelated features; it is more continuous coding capacity at a predictable cost.

Please consider a dedicated Codex Developer plan or flexible subscription allocation for professional and independent developers.

I’m glad to see other developers have the same need.

If you mainly use ChatGPT for Codex, debugging, repository work, terminal workflows, testing, refactoring, and long coding sessions, please support this proposal and add your own experience.

The main request is a Developer / Codex-focused plan with:

  • longer uninterrupted coding sessions
  • no short 5-hour bottleneck
  • much larger weekly or monthly Codex allowance
  • clearer usage tracking
  • pricing focused mainly on development
  • an optional pay-as-you-go continuation after included usage is exhausted

if developers can continue coding instead of being forced to stop and wait for a reset, they are much less likely to leave the OpenAI ecosystem and move to another coding platform.

If the extra usage is priced efficiently enough for developers while still remaining profitable for OpenAI, it could create a very strong long-term model:

Developer keeps coding → OpenAI earns from continued usage → developer has less reason to switch to another service.

This is especially important for developers who may work 6–10+ hours in a day. The interruption itself can be more damaging than the cost.

A good model could be:

large included Codex allowance + no short session cap + optional paid continuation when needed

rather than forcing developers to stop working until a reset date.

If this would improve your workflow, please vote and comment with your own experience — especially how many hours you use Codex, what limits affect you most, and whether you would prefer a dedicated coding plan over paying for features you rarely use.

This is a mutual benefit:

developers get continuity, OpenAI gets retention and continued paid usage.
