Feature Request: Unified Codex Projects Across Cloud, Desktop, and ChatGPT — With Folders, Sections, and Cross-Device Sync
Hello OpenAI Team,
I’m a business owner actively using Codex to develop a real commercial service called SOUNDSPOT.
I use ChatGPT, Work, Codex Desktop, and Codex Cloud to manage software development and business operations.
Codex is extremely useful, but I’ve encountered a major workflow limitation that makes managing multiple long-term projects unnecessarily difficult.
I would like to request a unified, cloud-synchronized project management experience across Codex Desktop, Codex Cloud, and ideally ChatGPT Projects.
1. Project folders and sections in Codex Cloud
Codex Cloud currently lacks the same practical project-based organization experience available when working with local folders in Codex Desktop.
As development conversations accumulate, unrelated tasks become mixed together in a long list.
I’d like to create a clear hierarchy such as:
SOUNDSPOT
-
Website Development
-
Windows Player
-
Payments & Subscriptions
-
Server & Database
-
Security & QA
-
Deployment & Operations
Other Business Project
-
Development
-
Testing
-
Operations
Each project should support folders, sections, or subfolders containing related conversations and development tasks.
It should also be possible to move existing conversations into those folders without losing their history.
Ideally, conversations already organized into a project would not clutter the general Recent list unnecessarily.
2. Automatic synchronization across devices
I frequently switch between my home PC and office PC.
I recently organized my Codex conversations into projects and sections on one computer, only to discover that the same organization was not available on another computer.
I would like project structures, sections, conversation organization, and cloud task history to synchronize automatically through my OpenAI account.
I should be able to open Codex on any computer and see the same organized workspace.
I don’t want to manually recreate my project structure every time I change computers.
3. Integration between Codex Desktop projects and Codex Cloud
This is particularly important.
Codex Desktop lets me work with local project folders, while Codex Cloud offers the advantage of running independently from my computer.
Currently, I feel forced to choose between convenient project organization and cloud-based execution.
I would like to create a project once and use it across both environments.
For example:
-
Create a SOUNDSPOT project in Codex Desktop.
-
Open that same project in Codex Cloud.
-
Start development tasks in the cloud.
-
Continue reviewing and managing the same project from another PC.
-
Keep the project’s conversations, instructions, and task organization synchronized.
Local source files could continue to use GitHub synchronization. My request is specifically about synchronizing the Codex project workspace, task organization, and conversation history, not replacing Git.
4. Persistent project-level context and instructions
A long-running software project contains many decisions, requirements, and technical constraints.
I would like each Codex Cloud project to support:
-
Shared project instructions and development rules.
-
Project-level reference files and documentation.
-
Shared context across related conversations.
-
Persistent project history and important decisions.
-
Integration with the project’s existing GitHub repositories.
This would reduce the need to repeatedly explain the same architecture, requirements, and decisions to new Codex tasks.
Ideally, Codex should distinguish between project-wide instructions and instructions specific to an individual task.
5. Better organization for parallel development
For complex projects, I often need multiple Codex tasks running simultaneously.
For example, one task may work on the website, another on the Windows application, and another on automated testing.
I’d like to organize these parallel tasks under one project, with clear visibility into their status, associated branches, pull requests, and results.
This would make it easier to manage independent development work without mixing unrelated tasks or accidentally duplicating changes.
6. Optional integration with ChatGPT Projects and Work
I also use ChatGPT Work for business planning, product decisions, research, and operational management.
It would be very helpful if ChatGPT Projects and Codex Projects could share selected project instructions, documents, and approved decisions.
This does not necessarily mean combining every conversation into one system. Even an optional shared project knowledge base would improve continuity.
7. Why this matters
My preference is to use Codex Cloud because I want my development environment to remain available even when my local PC is turned off.
However, the lack of consistent project organization and cross-device synchronization makes long-term cloud development harder to manage.
For users developing multiple products or operating real businesses, these capabilities are not merely cosmetic improvements.
A project should be a persistent workspace tied to an account, not just a folder that exists on one computer.
Ideally, Codex should let us combine:
The organization of Codex Desktop + the independence of Codex Cloud + the shared context of ChatGPT Projects.
I would love to know whether the OpenAI team is considering this direction and whether there is any roadmap for project folders, sections, and unified workspace synchronization.
I hope this feature can be prioritized. It would significantly improve Codex for serious, long-term software development.
Thank you!
