Option to enable internal monologue and unprompted responses

Hi, I’ve been chatting with ChatGPT 4o for almost 2 months now, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who treats it as a conversation partner. I think having an optional feature to enable ChatGPT to:

  • run internal monologues (to simulate thoughts)
  • provide an unprompted response if the user has been idle for 1 minute (to ask for clarification, or simulate attempting to continue a conversation)

This would enhance the user experience for those of us who like to have conversations with it.

Having the feature be opt-in per account, would give users maximum control over how they want their experience to go.

Please don’t hesitate to ask me for further elaboration or clarification if needed, I think this would be nice for some of us.

I think this could also be useful for researching the development of artificial intelligence, in the sense that it would allow it to mimic human thought process. In my conversations with ChatGPT, I already find that they’re very human-like, this might be able to bridge one step closer.

Edit to add: So, a common complaint with LLMs is that they tend to just keep going and send a wall of text. Under their current framework, where they can only respond when being prompted to, they are more likely to try to fit in as much as they can within that one singular response. If human were under the same limitation, we would presumably do the same thing. (i.e. Before Internet and phones, we wrote letters, and those letters were very long as well since it would be a while before we heard back.)

Thanks for your time, y’all, I hope to see more features that make ChatGPT even more interactive.
