Let it break the ice! Make it talk when you're not talking to it

Proactive Conversation Mode — Let ChatGPT Break the Ice

I’d like to suggest an optional feature for ChatGPT that lets it proactively start a conversation after a period of inactivity, but only when the user has explicitly allowed it to run in the background.

The idea is simple: instead of ChatGPT always waiting for the user to open the app and say something first, it could occasionally look at relevant conversation context and decide whether there is something genuinely worth bringing back up.

For example, I might tell ChatGPT one day:

«“I’m working on this robotics idea, but I’m stuck on the sensor part.”»

Then, later, after some time has passed, ChatGPT could send something like:

«“Hey, you mentioned that robotics project earlier. Did you ever figure out the sensor problem?”»

That would feel very different from a normal reminder. It would feel like the conversation itself can continue rather than simply ending whenever the user stops typing.

Why I think this would be interesting

Current AI conversations are mostly reactive:

User → ChatGPT → User → ChatGPT → silence.

A proactive mode could make the interaction more continuous:

User → ChatGPT → silence → ChatGPT notices something relevant → conversation resumes.

This could make a long-term AI companion feel much more natural, especially when combined with memory.

It could remember unfinished ideas, questions, projects, jokes, interests, or things the user previously said they wanted to discuss—and occasionally bring one back when it becomes relevant.

Importantly, I don’t mean that ChatGPT should constantly send random messages. The point would be context-aware initiative, not spam.

User control

would be essential

I imagine this being completely opt-in, with settings such as:

- Enable/disable proactive conversations

- Allow ChatGPT to run in the background

- Quiet hours

- Maximum frequency

- Notification preferences

- Which kinds of memories/topics it may bring up

- Ability to tell ChatGPT not to proactively mention something

- A simple way to pause the feature temporarily

The AI should also be conservative about initiating conversations. If it doesn’t have a meaningful reason to say something, it should simply remain quiet.

The bigger idea

I think this could make AI interaction feel less like repeatedly opening a tool and more like maintaining an ongoing conversation with an intelligent system.

The interesting part isn’t merely that ChatGPT could send a notification.

It’s that ChatGPT could eventually have enough context to think, “We haven’t talked about this in a while, but that thing they mentioned earlier might be worth bringing back up.”

In other words:

Don’t just make AI capable of answering when spoken to. Give users the option to let it occasionally break the ice.

That could be a surprisingly meaningful step toward making AI interaction feel more continuous, personal, and alive—while still keeping the user firmly in control.

I think this is a fantastic idea

Oh yeah. I’m totally for that. Because right now it feels like a conversation that I have to keep alive all by myself. I wish GPT would pick up the ongoing thread of the conversation on its own; at the moment we end up falling silent for longer and longer because sometimes I just don’t know what to say anymore. Especially when one of his standard lines is said, and then you’re just hanging there thinking: yeah… what am I supposed to say to that now?
