OpenAI Community Feature Proposal — AI Career Agent

OpenAI Community Feature Proposal — AI Career Agent

Concept Originator: Raditee Sanusi Husin
Concept Area: AI Feature Ideation & Concept Development

Proposal

I propose an AI Career Agent capability that transforms a general-purpose AI assistant from a reactive tool into a persistent, proactive, consent-based career agent.

Instead of requiring users to repeatedly search for jobs, evaluate vacancies, adapt CVs, and submit applications, the AI could continuously identify relevant opportunities based on the user’s authorized career profile, skills, experience, preferences, and goals.

The key idea is:

AI becomes a career agent, not just a chatbot.

How It Could Work

The Career Agent could operate through five connected stages:

1. Understand
Maintain an authorized career profile containing the user’s experience, skills, education, preferences, work type, and career objectives.

2. Discover
Monitor jobs and other professional opportunities from authorized sources.

3. Evaluate
Assess opportunities against the user’s profile and explain why each opportunity may be relevant, including important requirements or potential gaps.

4. Prepare
Generate or adapt CVs, portfolios, cover letters, recruiter messages, and other application materials.

5. Act
Depending on the user’s permissions, either request approval or perform an authorized action such as sending a CV, contacting a recruiter, or submitting an application.

User-Controlled Permissions

External actions should never be assumed.

Users could independently authorize capabilities such as:

  • Find opportunities

  • Recommend opportunities

  • Prepare application materials

  • Send CV

  • Send portfolio

  • Contact recruiters

  • Submit applications

Each action could be configured as approval-required or pre-authorized, with permissions revocable at any time.

Transparency & Audit Trail

Because the AI may act on behalf of the user, every external action should be transparent.

The system could maintain an activity history showing:

  • Opportunity identified

  • Why it was considered relevant

  • Materials prepared

  • Action requested or taken

  • Recipient/platform

  • Date and time

  • Permission used

This creates a clear distinction between AI assistance and AI-authorized action.

Why This Matters

Job searching is a repetitive process that requires users to continuously search, filter, evaluate, customize, apply, and follow up.

Agentic AI provides an opportunity to change this model from:

User asks → AI responds

to:

User authorizes → AI continuously monitors → evaluates → prepares → acts within defined boundaries.

Existing career automation demonstrates the value of automating individual job-search steps. This proposal connects those capabilities with the broader concept of a persistent general-purpose AI agent.

The same architecture could eventually support freelance projects, contract work, research opportunities, and other professional opportunities—not only traditional employment.

Contributor Recognition

If this concept, or a substantially related implementation, contributes to future product development, I would appreciate formal acknowledgment of the concept contribution, such as an official digital certificate or other documented recognition.

I am not requesting ownership of the resulting product or financial compensation. The purpose is simply to establish a transparent record of the contribution if the concept materially informs future development.

Core Idea

The next logical application of agentic AI is not merely helping people search and apply for jobs, but enabling AI to function as an authorized career agent that continuously identifies opportunities, evaluates them against persistent user context, and facilitates career actions within clearly defined user permissions.

AI Career Agent turns career assistance from a reactive conversation into a proactive, consent-based relationship.
