OpenAI ChatGPT Windows Desktop App won't launch correctly after many uses

This issue isn’t about the initial installation or getting the app to work the first time—it’s about the OpenAI ChatGPT desktop app for Windows not launching after having been used successfully many times.

To resolve this use Windows Task Manager:

  1. Locate ChatGPT in the list.
  2. Right-click on ChatGPT and select End task.
  3. Start the OpenAI ChatGPT Windows Desktop App as normal. (ref)

Before this worked tried several other possible remedies

  • close the app window
  • close the web page
  • manually close all ChatGPT sessions on all devices
  • log out of all of my devices (did not wait 30 minutes to see if it worked)
