I’d like to see a NotebookLM-style feature added to ChatGPT where users can create persistent notebooks built around a collection of sources.
Projects already cover part of this, but I’d like the sources themselves to be a first-class part of the workspace.
A notebook could include:
- PDFs, documents, notes, web pages, slides, spreadsheets, and transcripts
- Folders/tags for organizing sources
- Source-grounded answers with precise citations
- The ability to enable or disable specific sources
- Search across the whole source library
- Persistent chats that all share the same notebook context
- Study guides, quizzes, flashcards, summaries, timelines, and comparisons
- Detection of conflicting information or missing material across sources
This would be especially useful for students, researchers, and other document-heavy workflows.
For a student, one course notebook could contain the syllabus, textbook chapters, lecture slides, transcripts, notes, assignments, and readings. ChatGPT could then tutor directly from that material, quiz the student, identify weak topics, and compare what the professor emphasized against the textbook or notes.
GPT-Live could make this even more useful. A student could have a live voice study session using the notebook as context:
“Quiz me on chapters 4–6.”
“Give me a 30-minute verbal review for tomorrow’s exam.”
“Explain what my professor meant on slide 34.”
Ideally, Live could also show citations or the source currently being referenced while the conversation continues.
I’d also like notebooks to expand into planning and project management.
ChatGPT could detect deadlines from syllabi, assignment sheets, or project briefs and offer to add them to a calendar. It could create recurring study sessions, reminders, and progress-based notifications.
For example:
“Your exam is in five days, but you haven’t reviewed chapters 7–9 yet.”
“This paper is due Friday. You collected the sources, but haven’t started the outline.”
“If I haven’t started this assignment three days before it’s due, remind me.”
The notebook could track things like:
- Upcoming deadlines
- Tasks and milestones
- Study/work sessions
- Material reviewed
- Assignments started or completed
- Weak topics
- Suggested next steps
It could also integrate with Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, or Outlook so ChatGPT can schedule work around existing commitments.
This could become more than a NotebookLM competitor. It could be a persistent knowledge + planning workspace where ChatGPT understands:
- What information you have
- What you need to do
- When it needs to be done
- How much progress you’ve made
- What needs attention next
For students it becomes a tutor and course manager. For researchers it becomes a literature library and research planner. For professionals it becomes a document workspace and project manager.
The main idea is to combine source-grounded knowledge, ChatGPT’s reasoning, GPT-Live, scheduling, reminders, and progress tracking into one persistent workspace.
