Native Chat Export to Markdown (.md), Text (.txt), and JSON formats

Currently, sharing an entire conversation or backing it up locally requires users to either use the “Share Link” feature (which relies on hosting by OpenAI) or copy-paste text manually, losing formatting. While account-level data export exists in settings, it is a bulk download of all data, which takes time to compile and isn’t useful for quickly saving a single, specific conversation.

I would love to see a native “Export Chat As…” button added directly to the chat interface (ideally next to the existing share/delete buttons or inside the sidebar menu). Clicking this would allow users to instantly download the current active conversation in one of three clean formats:

  • Markdown (.md): To preserve text formatting (bolding, headers, tables, and code blocks) for personal knowledge bases like Obsidian or Notion.
  • Plain Text (.txt): For quick, lightweight reading and universal compatibility.
  • JSON (.json): For developers who want structured data of the conversation for fine-tuning or API testing.

Thanks for the clear request. Eligible accounts can export their account data: https://help.openai.com/en/articles/7260999. A quick export of one chat is different. We’ll pass along the Markdown, text and JSON options; no timeline to share.
