Hi OpenAI team,
I would like to request a feature that allows users to export long ChatGPT conversations as Markdown or plain text.
For some users, ChatGPT conversations are not just temporary chat history. They become project records, creative logs, research notes, work journals, and primary source material for long-term thinking.
Currently, when a conversation becomes very long, the only practical way to revisit earlier parts is to manually scroll back through the chat UI. This becomes difficult and inefficient for users who use ChatGPT for ongoing projects, writing, research, or long-term idea development.
It would be very helpful to have an export feature with options such as:
-
Export an entire conversation thread
-
Export as Markdown or plain text
-
Preserve speaker labels, timestamps, and message order
-
Include references to uploaded files and images
-
Export a selected date range or partial section of a conversation
-
Choose between full export and summarized export
-
Make the output easy to import into tools like Obsidian, NotebookLM, Notion, or other knowledge management systems
In my use case, I use ChatGPT for creative work, technical research, work logs, and long-term project discussions. These conversations often become valuable records that I want to review, organize, and reuse later.
ChatGPT is already very powerful as a thinking and discussion tool. Adding better export functionality would make long-term conversations much more useful as reusable knowledge assets.
Thank you for considering this request.
