Native AI-Assisted Bulk Organization of Chats into Projects

Feature Request: AI-Assisted Bulk Organization of Existing Chats

I am an infrastructure engineer and a heavy ChatGPT user. Over time, ChatGPT has become more than a question-and-answer tool for me. It is a technical collaborator, research assistant, documentation editor and project planner.

Projects are a major improvement, but many users accumulated large chat histories before, or outside, Projects. We may now have hundreds of loose conversations that belong in clearly defined Projects, with no realistic way to organize them.

ChatGPT can already understand where my conversations belong. I have created the Projects. What is missing is a safe, automated way to apply that organization.

A Real-World Example

I operate an extensive homelab under my custom domain. It includes UniFi networking, Cloudflare, DNS, Docker, Caddy, Home Assistant, Plex and many other applications.

I have separate ChatGPT conversations about network architecture, certificates, reverse proxying, storage, backups, containerization, automation and an eventual migration from macOS to Linux servers. They belong in my Homelab Project, but many were created before that Project existed.

ChatGPT could easily recognize that conversations mentioning UniFi, Caddy, Plex, Docker or Homelab probably belong there. Moving them individually, however, would take hours.

My other major example is my nonprofit, Utopia Project US. And since this is a public post, I will take the opportunity for a shameless plug: utopiaproject.us.

Its work includes nonprofit governance, bylaws, organizational documentation, public communications, a website, a telephone and IVR system, and its flagship initiative, Constitution v2.0.

Those conversations span several related Projects. Organizational operations belong in Utopia Project US; constitutional drafting belongs in Constitution v2.0; website development belongs in TUPUS Website; and research about the existing Constitution belongs in United States Constitution.

Not to mention my countless other random chats about fitness, health, finances, gaming, relationships… It would be easier to revisit these if they were all grouped together.

ChatGPT understands these distinctions because it helped me establish them. Yet it cannot help apply those decisions to my existing history.

What I Am Requesting

Please add a native Organize chats feature:

  1. The user selects a scope, such as all unassigned chats, search results or a date range.

  2. ChatGPT analyzes the conversation titles and contents.

  3. It recommends a destination Project for each conversation.

  4. The recommendations appear in a review table with a brief rationale and confidence level.

  5. Ambiguous or low-confidence conversations remain unassigned by default.

  6. Nothing moves until the user explicitly approves the proposed batch.

  7. The completed operation can be undone.

This would preserve the current security model. ChatGPT would not receive unrestricted control over its own interface. Instead, it would receive a narrowly defined organizational function with preview, explicit approval, an audit trail and undo.

At Minimum, Give Us Multi-Select

Even without AI classification, ChatGPT needs basic bulk actions:

  • Select multiple conversations

  • Select all matching search results

  • Move selected conversations into a Project

  • Archive or delete selected conversations

  • Undo a completed bulk action

Once users have hundreds of conversations, moving them individually is no longer practical. Most people will understandably give up, leaving Projects organized only from the day they were created forward.

Projects encourage us to treat ChatGPT as a long-term workspace. A long-term workspace needs tools for maintaining the knowledge accumulated inside it.

I have already created the Projects. ChatGPT can identify where the conversations belong. Please give us a safe and efficient way to finish the job.

TL;DR

What we need: A native, AI-assisted organizer that recommends Projects for existing conversations and lets users review, approve and undo bulk moves. At minimum, we need multi-select and bulk Move to Project actions.

Why we need it: Long-term users may have hundreds or thousands of loose conversations. Moving each one individually is so time-consuming that organizing the backlog is effectively impossible.

Who it benefits: Anyone using ChatGPT as a long-term workspace, especially professionals, researchers, developers, writers, students and organizations managing multiple ongoing projects.

How it stays safe: ChatGPT only recommends changes. Nothing moves until the user reviews and approves the proposed batch, ambiguous conversations remain untouched by default, and every bulk action can be undone.

Thanks for the detailed workflow! You can move chats into Projects today: https://help.openai.com/en/articles/10169521. AI suggestions, approval and undo for bulk moves would go further. We can share that feedback with the product team; we don’t have a timeline.
