Memory... and how it's used

Is the only purpose of memory to remember something beyond a specific thread? Some times, in a thread, I will tell it to remember something, but I mean to only remember to reference it in the future within that specific thread. Then it creates a note in memory. Is it going to be referencing that within other threads, or will it just remember it within the thread that I told it to?

Memory saves small things like user likes to be called etc . You can tell it to not forget too.

You can also give it custom instructions.

How did my other solution in your first post work for you? :rabbit:

The other solution was very helpful. Thank you!!!
With this one, the issue that I’m running into is that each thread represents a specific student and their information. I don’t want other threads to be referencing information on other threads, so if I see in Memory that it’s remembering something from a thread about a student, I’m thinking I should go ahead and delete that in memory because I don’t want it to affect other threads. Am I correct in my assessment?

You need to turn off memory and turn on custom instructions . It can be guided in instructions how you want your doc read …

If you turn on user instructions in settings this frame pops up and you have 1500 characters of instructions your 4o will use . Just tell it about the doc there the same way you do in chat and it will remember every time. You have to explain it to it.

That’s awesome! I will give that a try

Is the only customization I can use limited to 1,500 characters?

No if you make a custom GPT using builder it is 8000
