Background & Problem
As ChatGPT responses become increasingly detailed and comprehensive, users often need to read through long answers containing technical terminology, unfamiliar concepts, references, people, and organizations.
During this process, users may want to use the “Ask ChatGPT” feature to clarify a specific term, identify a person, understand the source of a piece of information, or get a brief explanation of a particular statement.
However, the current interaction can interrupt the user’s primary reading flow. Instead of quickly resolving a minor question and continuing to read, users may be taken into a separate interaction or receive another lengthy response.
In many of these situations, users are not looking for another comprehensive answer. They simply need a small amount of contextual information to continue understanding the original content.
Proposed Improvement
I suggest introducing a Contextual Quick Answer Mode for the “Ask ChatGPT” feature, specifically designed for users who are reading long-form responses.
The proposed experience could include the following improvements:
1. Short Answers by Default
When users select a term, name, sentence, or specific piece of information and invoke Ask ChatGPT, prioritize a concise, context-aware explanation.
Typical use cases include:
-
What does this term or concept mean?
-
Where does this information come from?
-
Who is this person or organization?
-
Could you briefly explain this statement?
-
What is the meaning of this technical abbreviation?
The default response should ideally be limited to one or two sentences, or a few short bullet points, depending on the question.
2. Preserve the Primary Reading Experience
The quick answer should appear in a lightweight, non-disruptive interface, such as an inline popover or a compact side panel.
Users should be able to:
-
Continue reading the original response without losing their current position.
-
Dismiss the contextual answer and immediately return to the original reading flow.
-
Avoid having every minor clarification inserted into or interrupting the main conversation.
3. Optional Expansion for More Detailed Answers
If the question requires a more comprehensive explanation, users should have the option to expand the answer.
For example:
-
Quick Answer: A brief explanation displayed by default.
-
Expand: View the complete explanation when needed.
-
Continue in Main Chat: Move the question into the main conversation for further discussion.
4. Defer Detailed Questions to the Next Main Conversation Turn
For questions that are useful but not immediately necessary, consider allowing users to save or queue them and choose whether to have them addressed together with their next main-chat request.
This would help users distinguish between immediate contextual clarification and questions that deserve a deeper discussion.
Expected Benefits
-
Better Reading Continuity: Users can stay focused on the original response without repeatedly switching contexts.
-
Lower Cognitive Load: Minor questions receive proportionate answers instead of generating another lengthy interaction.
-
More Efficient Conversations: The main conversation remains focused on the primary topic, while secondary questions can be handled independently or deferred.
-
Better User Control: Users decide when they need a quick clarification and when they want a deeper explanation.
Overall Suggestion
The key idea is to make Ask ChatGPT behave more like an intelligent reading assistant rather than automatically initiating another full conversational interaction.
Quick clarification should be the default; deeper exploration should be optional.
This would be particularly valuable for users who regularly use ChatGPT to read technical documents, research reports, lengthy explanations, and other knowledge-intensive content.
