I’m seeing what appears to be an account-specific Read Aloud voice mismatch in the ChatGPT macOS app.
Issue
My selected ChatGPT voice is Sol, and Read Aloud sounds correct on:
- ChatGPT web
- iOS app
- Android app
However, in the ChatGPT macOS app only, Read Aloud suddenly switched to a deep male-sounding voice and will not revert back to Sol.
Environment
- macOS: 26.5.1 (25F80)
- ChatGPT macOS app: 1.2026.153
- Selected voice: Sol
- Feature affected: Read Aloud
- Voice Mode is not what I’m referring to; I understand macOS Voice Mode was retired. This is specifically the Read Aloud feature.
Why I think this is account-level
I fully removed and reinstalled the macOS app using AppCleaner, including hidden folders / local app data. The issue persisted.
When I sign into the same macOS app with a different ChatGPT account, the Read Aloud voice is different/normal. So this does not appear to be a local cache or reinstall issue.
Expected behavior
Read Aloud in the macOS app should use the selected voice, Sol, matching web/iOS/Android.
Actual behavior
Read Aloud in the macOS app uses a different deep male voice only for my account.
Troubleshooting already attempted
- Fully quit and restarted the app
- Updated/reinstalled the app
- Removed local app data with AppCleaner
- Tested the same account across macOS, web, iOS, and Android
- Tested a different account on the same macOS app
- Reported the bug through the macOS app already
Question
Can anyone from OpenAI confirm whether Read Aloud voice selection on macOS is currently backed by an account-level setting or server-side voice preference that can get stuck/desynced?
This seems separate from the retired macOS Voice Mode, since OpenAI’s release notes say macOS Voice was retired effective January 15, 2026, but this issue is with Read Aloud behavior specifically.
