I am a technical student and I often use o1 for help with my math/physics problems.
Problem: When o1 responds it often fails to render LaTeX and I am just left with the raw LaTeX code.
This really bugs me, because I love the keyboard shortcut to pullup chatgpt anywhere on my OS, but this refrains me from using it since I mostly use chatgpt for stuff that require LaTeX.
Below I have attached a screenshot of the same chat side by side in the website version (left) and the macos version (right).
Reproducibility is easy since it basically happens any time the mac app tries to render LaTeX. This occurs in both the full mac app, and the pop-up version you get when you press option+space.
I tried looking if i could maybe spot a parsing error, so I copied the raw response from the website and tried looking for a pattern of where rendering would fail and when it wouldn’t, but I could find anything. I initially thought that it just fails at either inline/outline LaTeX, but it seems that it sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t on both.
Whilst doing this, I ran into another bug in the macos app, where if you use the copy response button in the macos app, it doesn’t copy whatever LaTeX rendered, but just the text surrounding it. So basically if the LaTeX works as expected, the copy button doesn’t work properly. I will submit another bug report for that after this one.
I am on chatgpt macos version 1.2025.009 (1737138094), but this issue has been around of a while.
