Latest Windows Codex build crashes unexpectedly during normal use

Since updating to the latest Windows version of Codex Desktop, I’ve started experiencing unexpected crashes that didn’t occur before.

The application will sometimes close by itself while it’s working, without any warning, error message, or obvious trigger. I haven’t been able to identify a consistent way to reproduce the issue—it simply crashes during normal use.

What’s interesting is that I was using an earlier version just two days ago, and I never encountered this behavior. Because of that, I suspect this may have been introduced in a recent update.

I’m posting this here in case other Windows users are seeing the same problem. If multiple people are experiencing similar crashes, I hope the OpenAI team can collect these reports, identify the underlying cause, and include a fix in a future update.

If anyone else has encountered this issue, it would be helpful to know whether you’ve found any pattern or workaround.

Thank you.

Is your problem similar to

Possibly, but I only opened one window, with only 1 agent.

I’m experiencing the same problem. Codex crashes frequently. It seems to be correlated with heavy usage. I often have multiple chats in a project working on simultaneous tasks. Without any warning or error message, the entire codex process just quits. There’s nothing in the windows event viewer to indicate what went wrong.

This is on an Intel 18 core cpu with 64g ram running the latest windows 11 and the latest codex release.

Same here. its frustrating.

I currently have the same or similar issues, updated yesterday and liked the new UI changes but 30 minutes later it just decided to stop working. Opening chats makes it freeze until restart - like no response at all - and it keeps happening after PC restart, reinstall of the new “chat gpt” app and what ever else I could find to try.

System is a 5950x with a 4090 and 64gb ddr4 no storage issues or anything else that could cause this. At least to my knowledge.

I have same problem. Randomly crashed with just 16 windows

128gb ddr5 9950x3d 5090 9000d properly cooled

switched to cli in the meantime.

Today, Codex fails to work as an app. It launches, shows its UX, and then crashes.
I’ve tried to repair it via settings, then tried to reset it, no changes.
Uninstalled, installed again - still launches, shows its UX, and then crashes.
Deleted %userprofile%\.cache\codex-runtimes - still launches, shows its UX, and then crashes.
Renamed %userprofile%\.codex to %userprofile%\.codex.bak - launched, asked to sign in, asked a few questions, showed its UX, and then crashed, again.

I have no idea what to do. Same build on a different machine works just fine.

This machine is Windows 11 WoA (ARM64) on SP 11 (32GB RAM, 1TB SSD). The other machine is Windows 11 (AMD64) on custom PC (128GB RAM, 2TB + 4TB SSD).

I am having same issue. I used to be able to resolve the issue with a simple restart, but today I tried everything I can think of and it is still crashing. I can use the browser for chatgpt but I need the app for Codex.

I’m running Codex on Windows on Arm and it crashes shortly after launch, so I’m unable to use it normally.

Environment:

  • OS: Windows on Arm
  • Codex version:
  • Device model:
  • Time: 2026-07-16
  • Trigger: <for example: crashes on launch / crashes after opening a project / crashes after running a command>

Behavior:

  • Codex starts and then crashes
  • It may exit while loading, opening a workspace, or performing an action
  • It never reaches a usable state

I’m still having the issue on Windows, using codex in WSL. I open the app, even after update, and it crashes immediately. The UI appears, the cursor is blinking but any action causes Windows to let me know that it’s unresponsive, and then it promptly closes.

Wasn’t happening until today.
