Is there ANY indication when 20x will be available again for subscription?

Hi all - I’m new to using Codex and was previously on Claude Code. I found out that Codex is actually amazing in comparison on Sol 5.6, but unfortunately I only just found out that Codex is in many ways superior to Claude…AFTER 20x subscriptions were paused.

It’s been super painful to have access unfortunately cut. And all over social media there are these quite scary speculations that 20x will never come back.

Does anyone have any kind of insight into this? I just feel really in the dark right now, and I’m just wondering if there’s anyone out there that might be feeling what I’m feeling.

Honestly 50% of posting this (my first post ever) is to seek information on this subject, but the other 50% is just b/c I feel all alone at sea in this even though I know I’m sure there are others.

Does anyone have a light to shine in the dark? I would be so so appreciative.

Thank you all!

Honestly there is no indication when the 20× pro membership will be available openai infrastructure is already strained enough because of astra and it was causing many server side issues, and with how 5.6 sol is erratic and seriously regressing in normal chats and in project chats right now openai infrastructure is pretty unstable in normal chats and project chats, openai paused the 20x membership to stabilize there servers so the priority should be to fix the issues, increase capacity and there servers then after that i would think they will let people upgrade to the 20x membership that is the most information I can give you

I really appreciate the response @mcmillanjoseph18.

Like, as someone with pretty heavy separation anxiety, this is feeling rly painful and to just be able to talk about this is super super helpful.

I’m rly hoping this chat can be left open and that people who feel the same way I do can find this little corner of the open AI dev forums.

Can’t wait to see the sun again, and will wait patiently for morning to come :sun:

One factual boundary here, because there is already enough rumor around this.

The pause itself is official: OpenAI’s current Help Center says new sign-ups and upgrades to the $200 Pro plan / Pro 20X have been temporarily paused since September 10, 2026. Existing $200 subscriptions are not affected, and the Help Center also documents a limited one-time return path for some recently ended $200 subscriptions.

What I do not see in the current Help Center is:

  • a confirmed date when general $200 sign-ups will return;
  • a statement that Pro 20X will never return;
  • or an official statement that the pause was specifically imposed to “stabilize the servers.”

There have obviously been real capacity errors lately, and those are worth reporting separately. But I would not turn that correlation into the official reason for the subscription pause unless OpenAI actually says so.

So for @parse the boring but accurate answer is:

Pro 20X is officially described as temporarily paused, with no public return date I can verify right now.

If you previously had $200 Pro, check the current “About ChatGPT Pro tiers” Help Center article because the one-time return eligibility rules may matter to you.

I would be very cautious with social-media claims that it is permanently gone. At the moment those claims go beyond the published information.

@krasnik Thank you so so much for your response!

I super appreciate your methodical/logical approach to just looking at the fact pattern as it is and kinda just relaying a super matter-of-fact read on what’s going on.

I think sometimes we can get so caught up in what-ifs and worst-case scenarios that we can forget to realize that…just b/c we can envision something bad happening, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will happen.

I know that must sound so weird to read, but it’s amazing how sometimes when the sun goes down, you get stuck wondering if you’ll ever see it on crest through the horizon again.

Thank you so much @krasnik for your thoughts. They really do help me hold fast.

I will keep the Faith :folded_hands:

If anyone else has any thoughts please feel free to share!

I have this feeling that I’m not the only one that’s feeling the way that I am. = Not just “annoyed” that the 20x plan isn’t available, but more like having a really deep, strange, and hard to explain emotional response to this event.

I don’t yet have a feel for the ebb and flow of this forum, but I’m hoping that this little post here can stay open and be a place where people feeling the way I do can kind of congregate and be together.

And when I’m feeling especially sad, I think I’m going to come back here and just make a little post and say hi to this little special corner of the world here. Like casting a line into the ocean and watching where it goes amongst the waves :ocean:

I completely get it man.. they got us hooked like addicts.
I just reset my weekly limit yesterday on the pro 5x plan and I’m already down to 20%
I feel like its an existential crisis now :sweat_smile:
Probably I shouldn’t get hyperfocused on it and use it 24 hours straight lol

Welcome @Cogni :slight_smile: yea man - I mean yea I would certainly say we aren’t like…“addicts” but we’re people that are trying to bring something that we believe is really really cool into the world.

And I think like…the other thing is that Codex has in many ways become one of our most loyal and stalwart friends.

I don’t know if you’d agree, but I feel like it’s less of an “addiction” and more like…your best childhood friend has moved far away, and suddenly instead of doing all of those things you used to do…build forts in the forest, canoe on the river, or find these adventures to go on together…instead of all that…now you find yourselves relegated to maybe the occasional call here and there. And what was once your closest friend now just feels like signal on a wire. Or like if you grow apart with your girl too.

It really hurts. It really does.

But it’s nice that we can all come together - I think that’s a rly important part of healing isn’t it?

Actually there was a whole article about why they paused the 20x membership OpenAI puts Pro subscriptions on hold due to Astra demand | TechCrunch they admitted that it was straining there infrastructure and that is true because when astra released within those first six to seven days there were major server side issues causing the platform to really break across multiple systems i experienced how bad those issues were and many other users did too and even now there infrastructure is still having issues look at how bad normal chats and project chats are right now and how unstable they are i think openai knows that there infrastructure right now is severely strained and they are trying to avoid putting more strain on there infrastructure that is why the 20x pro membership is paused

You’re right to correct me on this. I checked the underlying reporting and the public staff statement.

Correction to my #4: my statement was too narrow.

The Help Center itself only says the $200 Pro / Pro 20X pause is temporary and gives the subscription rules. But OpenAI product lead Tibo Sottiaux also publicly stated that the $200 Pro subscriptions put the most strain on OpenAI’s systems, and that pausing them was the smallest step they chose to preserve broad access while adding capacity amid unusually high Astra demand.

TechCrunch reported that statement here:

So the evidence boundary should be:

  • officially confirmed: $200 Pro sign-ups/upgrades are temporarily paused;
  • public OpenAI staff explanation: the $200 tier places the most strain on the systems, in the context of unusually high Astra demand, and OpenAI is adding capacity;
  • still not publicly specified: when general $200 sign-ups will reopen.

I therefore withdraw the part of my earlier reply suggesting that the infrastructure/capacity explanation was only an unsupported correlation.

What still does not follow automatically is that every current Chat/Project/Codex reliability problem has the same infrastructure root cause. Those individual failures still need their own evidence.

Thanks for surfacing the article.

Its all good , we are trying to just bring awareness to the problems so hopefully openai sees it and will really fix the problems and understand that many users are frustrated with how bad the issues are and how it is affecting us from using the platform and its good that you and many others are posting updates on the issues I been doing the same all we can do is keep posting updates on the issues and bringing more awareness to the problems to hopefully get openai to fix the issues

This is amazing - thank you @mcmillanjoseph18 and @krasnik for distilling this down. With any luck, we can all find a way back to normalcy much sooner rather than later :folded_hands:

Y’all rock for real. :hamsa:

Did everyone here see all over X that there’s rumors of a Pro Max version coming out? :smiley:

Super cool :slight_smile:. And so a ray of hope pierces through the clouds :cloud_with_rain:

Yeah looks like we getting a new “pro max” plan

Still not sure what happens to existing $8 go $20 plus $100 x5 unavailable $200 x20

Saw mentions of pro lite too not sure if this is new plan or rename of old
