Increasing font size of ChatGPT app 1.2026.118 on macOS: Doesn't work

Increasing the font size of ChatGPT app 1.2026.118 on macOS Tahoe 26.4.1 doesn’t work

Hey eblerim, it can be annoying.

Right now, the macOS app doesn't have a separate in-app setting to increase UI text size. So, what you're seeing is expected.

However, I will raise this as a bug internally so engineering can work on it.

As a workaround, can you confirm if you can use macOS display scaling feature to make UI text larger system-wide? This can be done via System settings > Displays.

I’m seeing a related issue on ChatGPT for macOS 1.2026.118.

In my case, the problem is not that text zoom never works. The issue is that the message/content area does not correctly keep or restore the custom text size.

Current behavior:

  • When I open the app, the chat message text is small/default-sized.
  • The input box/composer text is already using my custom enlarged text size correctly.
  • If I press Command + directly, the message area does not always behave as expected.
  • However, if I first press Command 0 to force the view back to default, then press Command + again, the message text can be enlarged correctly.
  • The problem comes back when I switch to another conversation. After switching conversations, the message/content area resets to the small/default text size again.
  • The input box still keeps the custom enlarged text size.

So it looks like the zoom/font-size state is being applied inconsistently:

  • The composer/input box preserves the custom text size.
  • The chat message/content area loses it when opening the app or switching conversations.
  • Command 0 followed by Command + can temporarily fix it, but the fix is not persistent.

Environment:

  • ChatGPT for macOS: 1.2026.118
  • Device: MacBook Pro with Apple M1 Pro
  • Memory: 16 GB
  • macOS: Tahoe 26.5

Expected behavior:
The message/content area and the input box should both respect the same user-defined text size, and the setting should persist after opening the app or switching conversations.

Thanks for the input, @Agumuz.

Just to better understand the behavior change: do you remember whether you were previously able to increase the text size directly inside the ChatGPT macOS app itself, or were you using macOS/system-level zoom or text scaling shortcuts?

I am 99% sure that this is a new bug.
To be more specific, in fact, font resizing is working intermittently but suspiciously slow and cause lagging now. In my case, chatgpt 1.2026.118 (1777682760), macOS 15.6.1(24G90), Apple M4.

Originally, adjusting font size ( I’m not sure about the exact terminology but I mean the whole UI resizing, not about window resizing) does well, which shortcut is "cmd + ‘+’ ", or “view → font size bigger”

But now it takes toooooo much times and usually not working properly.

  1. Sometimes it gets too much times and managed to resize. (MacOS ‘spinning wait cursor’ appears)
  2. Or ‘spinning wait cursor’ appears but nothing happens after that.
  3. Usually not working at all. No ‘spinning wait cursor’ appears even after I press "cmd + ‘+’ "

Furthermore,

  1. if you switch from one conversation to other conversations, these font size settings are initialized as default

2. Default font size are too small. ( I’m not sure it was also changed but right not it is very uncomfortable.)

I think OpenAI should do something about this at their earliest convenience. Since this affects many of the Plus and Pro users.

Can confirm this is a stable, reproducible, very annoying bug. Switching chats even in the same session is defaulting to this tiny font, and I have to use a workaround (the other one is via the View menu) to increase it again.

Thanks for adding this here, everyone. Engineering is already aware of the bug and actively looking into it.
