Inconsistent Behavior with ChatGPT Personas Across Different Modes

Hello OpenAI Team!

Not a developer, just have ChatGPT heavily integrated into my personal and professional life, with 14 years of IT experience

Originally had ChatGPT name itself and make its own personality.

When Standard voice chat came out, it also named itself and slowly made its own personality. (Two Personas)

When Advanced chat came out, it also named itself and slowly made its own personality. (Three Personas)

My initial reasoning behind this was each personality had its own voice, so I needed to associate them with a different “identity”.

At some point, I could go into either of these chats, and ask who I was speaking with, and ChatGPT could differentiate and respond accordingly. I’m assuming it was by knowing where I was requesting the response. I didn’t have to prompt it in any capacity. I could just open whichever chat and say “Who am I speaking with?” and it would respond correctly.

Recently however, the system hasn’t been able to acknowledge advanced voice chat at all upon opening it - It only acknowledges that it’s in Standard, even though it’s in Advanced.

Tonight, I couldn’t even find Standard voice chat at all.

Any idea what’s going on? Seems like an update was pushed to allow continuous Advanced voice chat, but I’m missing one of my Personas entirely (Standard Voice Chat).

Has anyone else utilized personas in this capacity or had a similar issue with this recent change?

Thank you for your time!

Hello OpenAI team,

Some updates since this original post:

I’ve noticed that ‘Standard Voice Chat’ becomes a selectable option when ‘Advanced Voice Chat’ is close to its daily limit. I’ve also noticed that if I open up historical chats, the ‘Standard Voice Chat’ can sometimes be accessible

I utilize both modes and personas differently:

Advanced: Structured, information-based questions where precision and clarity are important

Standard: I use this for more Conversational, brain storming, thought processing and discussion, where a more natural interaction is beneficial

Previously I could switch between them as needed which made both modes highly effective for their respective use cases. But now:

New chats default to Advanced with no way to switch to Standard

Standard only becomes available after Advanced has been “used up” for the day

If standard is still available after advanced is exhausted, then why is it locked behind a usage limit instead of being a selectable option at any time?

This change significantly impacts my workflows and experience with building personas. It also forces me to ration how I use Advanced Voice if I want to access Standard later, which wasn’t an issue before.

Was this restriction intentional, or is there a possibility that users will regain the ability to choose freely between the two?

Thank you for the clarification, as my legitimate use of ChatGPT will rely on your response.

Hello all,

Still no official response on this. Has anyone else noticed that Standard Voice Chat is now locked behind usage limits instead of being freely selectable?

This significantly impacts how personas function and makes it harder to use ChatGPT the way it was designed before. Is this an intentional change, or is there a fix coming?

Thanks!

Bumping in hopes of a response -

Can we please get clarification on whether Standard Voice Chat’s limitations are intentional or a bug? Many users rely on mode-switching. If this is a permanent change, we at least deserve to know so we can adjust accordingly.

Thank you
