Image editing in ChatGPT?

I got an email yesterday from openai that said

…as of this week we’ve started the rollout of image editing in ChatGPT

What does that mean? I tried asking ChatGPT for editing and it still had the same functionality for dalle-3 as it has recently (can generate new images only). I had hoped “image editing” meant in-painting or out-painting…

Is there really a new feature coming or am I misinterpreting that line?

Hi!

That sounds interesting! Especially because I am really waiting for this feature.
Can you share the email as a whole?

In general I have not been particularly lucky with getting early access, so at least I’d like to know what is coming.

Yes! I think I’m getting it because I used dalle-2 a lot in early days, but I definitely am not a blessed early-access kind of user. Here’s the email:

Subject: Updates to DALL·E

Since launching DALL·E 3 in October 2023, we’ve been amazed by what has been created. We’re continuing to invest in DALL·E 3, which has higher quality images and enhanced prompt-following capabilities compared to previous models, and as of this week we’ve started the rollout of image editing in ChatGPT. If you haven’t yet tried it, DALL·E 3 is available to ChatGPT Plus, Team and Enterprise users.

As we focus on improving DALLE·3, we’ll be sunsetting DALL·E 2 in Labs next year. Here’s how this will affect your Labs account:

  • Labs credits will be available for purchase until May 1, 2024
  • Purchased Labs credits are valid for one year from the purchase date
  • Labs will remain online until May 1, 2025
  • DALL·E 2 will continue to be available via the OpenAI API

As a token of our appreciation, we’ll be granting you 15 Labs credits to use each month from April 1, 2024, to April 1, 2025.

We have loved seeing all the ways you’ve extended creativity with DALL·E and are grateful for your continued support. We can’t wait to see what you create next.

I think editing is just native to the interface. All text based.

I bet you’re right because it would be a bigger deal if more editing was offered, but I was so hopeful at the “…as of this week” part of it. “…as of this week we’ve started the rollout” makes it really sound like a new thing. I find the text editing really lame, in-painting and out-painting on the other hand are so powerful.

If the mail says:

then this sounds like a new feature and especially interesting will be if the original image is unchanged, besides the edits.
In the example from @steve.mudd the image changes a lot, event though the requested change does not require these edits. An actual edit feature would be a real step forward.

I have tried to edit a photo I have uploaded and it did not work. But it kind of works when the image to be edited is created in Dall E in the first place.

I’ve tried to edit an image but it’s not working either.
It can only re-create an image and not edit an image.

I got the same email from OpenAI a few days ago so not sure what that email was about unless they are phasing in the rollout?

The features you mentioned showed up for me today. I guess they’re doing a gradual roll-out. You’re now able to select an area of an image and edit just that area without altering anything else, which is great! Looks like outpainting on uploaded images still isn’t a thing yet, unfortunately. Hopefully that’s coming soon.
I couldn’t find any more info online about the update, so I’m guessing it hasn’t been rolled out very broadly yet.
