I want to start by prefacing that this post specifically refers to the memory feature under Settings > Personalization > Memory.
First, I believe it would be very useful if ChatGPT had the ability to modify its own memories.
This capability would enable a significant enhancement:
When memory reaches its limit, ChatGPT could consolidate older memories without losing any details. This could be achieved through summarization and/or combining related memories.
For example, if ChatGPT has four separate memories about your cats, it could merge them into a single, cohesive memory. This memory could be formatted as a bulleted list or simply rewritten to combine all the details in one place.
Additionally, there should be an option to mark specific memories as static (unchangeable). A toggle for each memory would let users decide which ones ChatGPT can modify and which ones should remain untouched.
This would be especially useful in cases where you want to preserve important information. For example, if ChatGPT knows your name, you wouldn’t want it to accidentally update or overwrite this information during a roleplay or joke where you temporarily use a different name.
