I want to make money by using my prompt engineering skills but i have no idea on how to start any help would be really appreciated
If you’re looking to make money with prompting, there are several avenues to explore, depending on your skills, experience, and interests. Let me break it down for you:
- Working as a Prompt Engineer (Employee Role)
Companies in tech, AI, and other forward-thinking industries are hiring prompt engineers. These roles involve crafting, testing, and refining prompts to optimize AI outputs for various applications.
- What You’ll Do: Develop prompts for tasks like customer support bots, content generation tools, or data analysis systems.
- Who’s Hiring: Look at tech giants, startups, and industries like healthcare, education, or finance. AI is being integrated everywhere, so opportunities are diverse.
- How to Prepare: Highlight your experience with AI tools (like ChatGPT, Gemini, or others), and build a portfolio showcasing creative, effective prompts you’ve designed.
- Freelancing (Entrepreneurial Route)
As a freelancer, you can offer your prompting expertise to businesses that lack in-house AI or tech talent.
-
Services You Can Offer:
- Create custom AI tools like GPT-powered agents, assistants, or chatbots tailored to specific business needs.
- Optimize and refine existing prompts to improve efficiency and accuracy in workflows.
- Train businesses to use AI tools effectively.
-
Clients to Target: Small-to-medium-sized businesses, content creators, and entrepreneurs are often looking for efficient, cost-effective AI solutions.
- Productizing Your Skills
Turn your expertise into products or resources:
- Courses or Workshops: Teach others how to create effective prompts through online courses or webinars. Platforms like Udemy, Teachable, or Skillshare are great for this.
- Pre-Built Prompt Libraries: Sell curated prompt libraries tailored to specific industries or tasks. For instance, “Prompts for E-commerce Marketing” or “Prompts for HR and Recruitment.”
- Consulting for AI Implementation
Some businesses are curious about integrating AI but have no idea where to start. Position yourself as a consultant to:
- Assess their needs.
- Create a strategy to incorporate AI effectively.
- Develop or implement customized AI tools using your prompt engineering expertise.
- Creating Niche AI Applications
AI is versatile, and there’s a growing demand for niche applications:
- Examples:
- Virtual tutors or learning tools for education.
- AI agents for customer support.
- Writing assistants for content creators, bloggers, and authors.
- Research tools for academics or analysts.
By identifying gaps in specific industries, you can design AI solutions that directly address unique problems.
– Advice for Success:
- Build a Portfolio: Demonstrate your abilities with examples. Show how your prompts solve real-world problems or improve workflows.
- Learn and Stay Updated: Keep up with advancements in AI and prompting techniques. The field is evolving fast.
- Network: Join AI forums, LinkedIn groups, or local meetups to connect with potential clients or collaborators.
- Experiment and Specialize: Explore various industries to find what excites you. Specializing in a specific niche can make you more appealing to clients or employers.
Hope this helps on your journey.
Super funny that you mention “Bard” in 2025
Hi @advikjazz and welcome to the community!
Just for context: I’ve been an engineer for the past 18 years, and the last 9 years working as a data scientist and ML engineer in different companies. These days I work almost exclusively with LLMs. Here is my take:
Prompt engineering flashed on the screen very briefly after ChatGPT was released, and I recall seeing “prompt engineer” positions on Glassdoor and Linkedin. I would say as a career bet, this is a dead end, since anyone who can write clear and concise instructions in English is technically a prompt engineer. I see it more as an addon skill (and in general, more of being able to “wield LLMs” rather than just prompts), rather than a discipline. So it should be coupled with something else that is an “actual” role, in order for it to give you extra powers. Some examples:
- ML Engineer - Basically being able to build RAG systems, and replace lot of classical ML classification pipelines with prompts and API; build agents and workflows; use cool new tools like DSPy; finetune LLMs
- Software Engineer - Essentially integrate the use of LLMs and prompting into your SWE and QA workflows, using tools like Cursor or just integrating LLMs into your CI/CD pipelines
- Art / Creatives - I don’t think LLMs can turn you into an artist, but if you are already a creative, LLMs and prompt engineering can just unleash incredible value, the same way various tools like light tables, cameras, and digital painting tools have unleashed incredible power to illustrators
- Domain Expertise - whether you work in life sciences, property management, finance, etc, you could probably boost your daily job by using LLM based tools.
That’s my take. So in short: rather than focusing on prompt engineering as a career, focus on integrating it into something you are very good at and love!
Could not agree more, “prompt engineering” will probably become like being a “good Googler” in the near future. In fact, I would be hesitant to hire a prompt engineer with a narrow background. In AI, context is everything, there will always be an answer, the most important part is the limitations and qualifiers you explain when you provide the answer. Domain and technical expertise are what will make you valuable.
Japan is one of the countries with a low AI utilization rate, but there are still some job openings for prompt engineers. You can also find services offering AI literacy training for companies and support for integrating AI into their operations. I occasionally teach basic prompt engineering myself. I’m sure there are similar opportunities in the U.S. as well.
It might be a good idea to start by teaching others the knowledge and skills you already have or by offering services to perform tasks that others cannot do. Building a track record to showcase your expertise and technical skills is a great first step.
Prompt engineering is the skill of conveying parameter exploration methods to AI through combinations of words. The complexity and depth of this field lie in the astronomical number of possible token combinations within the parameters. In other words, the potential is vast. The techniques commonly known today are just the tip of the iceberg. It is a field as challenging as understanding humans and society or teach anything to others.
Prompt engineering will likely evolve into a kind of craftsmanship in the near future. Everyone has unique knowledge and experiences that no one else possesses, and there are prompts that only you can create. The importance, diversity, and potential of system prompt design, in particular, are hardly understood at this point.
Because prompt engineering is such a new field, there are many opinions and predictions about it, but it is clear that most people are still unfamiliar with this technology. We, too, are in a state of knowing very little. Using what you know and can do now, and continuing to expand upon that, will surely lead to opportunities in the future.
lmao I meant *Gemini . I do tha in conversation sometimes too. lol
